Program-record six Toreros on MLB rosters
April 10, 2017

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Six former Torero baseball players are currently on MLB rosters, the most the program has ever had at one time. Joining veterans Kris Bryant (Cubs), A.J. Griffin (Rangers) and Sammy Solis (Nationals) are rookies James Pazos (Mariners), Dylan Covey (White Sox) and Paul Sewald (Mets).

“Torero nation continues to break barriers,” Head Coach Rich Hill said. “All the people involved with this program have refused to build a fence around what is perceived to be possible. To have six Toreros currently in the majors is a testament to the hard work and perseverance of these USD student-athletes.”

Torero fans are no stranger to the success of Chicago Cubs’ third baseman Kris Bryant. Last season he was named the National League MVP and helped the Cubs win their first world series since 1908, capping an incredible four-year span where he won the Golden Spikes Award at USD (2013), Minor League Player of the Year (2014) and National League Rookie of the Year (2015).

A.J. Griffin (2007-10), a two-time All-American at USD, is entering his fourth MLB season and second with the Texas Rangers. He entered the 2017 season with a 28-15 record in 70 career starts.

Sammy Solis (2008-10) enters his third season with Washington, where he has proved to be a valuable late-inning reliever for the Nationals. Across the past two seasons, he has appeared in 55 games and posted a 2.74 ERA while striking out 64 batters in 62.1 innings.

James Pazos (2011-12) made the Seattle Mariners’ 25-man roster out of spring training after being acquired from the New York Yankees organization in the offseason. The lefty has already made four relief appearances for the M’s and has yet to allow a run.

The Chicago White Sox selected RHP Dylan Covey (2011-13) from the Oakland A’s in the Rule 5 draft back in December, which means he must stay on the Sox’ 25-man roster for the entire 2017 season or be returned to Oakland. Covey is scheduled to make his MLB debut Friday, getting the start against the Minnesota Twins.

Right-hander Paul Sewald (2009-12) was called up by the New York Mets over the weekend and made his major league debut out of the bullpen on Saturday.
