ON DECK: The University of San Diego baseball team (25-27, 12-12 WCC) will finally return to the friendly confines of Fowler Park this week to close out the regular-season. On Wednesday, USD will host Arizona State in a 6 p.m. game. Then league-leading Gonzaga University comes to San Diego for a crucial three-game West Coast Conference series. Thursday and Friday’s games will have a 6 p.m. first pitch, while Saturday’s game will have a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS: Arizona State enters the game with an overall record of 31-17 after taking two of three from Arizona this past weekend. The Sun Devils are led offensively by David Greer, who is hitting .332 with 63 hits, 22 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 35 RBI. On the mound, ASU’s pitching rotation is anchored down by Seth Martinez, who is 8-3 with a 1.93 ERA.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS: Gonzaga enters the week with a slim one-game lead over both BYU and Saint Mary’s for first place in the WCC standings at 16-8 in league play, while holding a 30-15 overall record. The Zags offense is paced by Justin Jacobs, who is hitting .338 with 48 hits, six doubles, one triple, and 18 RBI. On the mound, the Bulldogs look to right-hander Brandon Bailey, who is 8-3 with a 2.04 ERA. Bailey has recorded 100 strikeouts, and only issued 25 walks in 79.2 innings of work.
WCC STANDINGS UPDATE: With just one weekend left, USD still has a chance to make it into the WCC Tournament next weekend in Stockton, Calif. What needs to happen? USD needs to sweep the league-leading Bulldogs this weekend, then have Pepperdine drop at least two games to Pacific. This is the only way the Toreros can get in.
BASEBALL STREAM THIS WEEK: All of this weeks games against Arizona State and Gonzaga will not only carry a video stream, but it will be a full video production, complete with graphics, multiple cameras, and all in high definition on theW.tv. A watch link can be found on the USD baseball schedule page on usdtoreros.com. Jack Murray will be on hand to provide all the live play-by-play action.
ROAD WARRIORS RETURN: The Toreros have not played a home game since April 19, a 5-4 loss to UC Riverside. Since then, San Diego has played its last 12 games on the road, including a week off just two weekends ago. How did the Toreros fare on this road swing? They posted a 5-7 overall record, hit .312 as a team, while holding opponents to just a .272 average. Daniel Gardner paced the Torero offense, as he hit .426 (20-for-47) with six doubles and 15 RBI. Nick Sprengel has been nearly lights out on the mound, as he is 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA, and has recorded 16 strikeouts.
GARDNER SWINGING IT WELL: Daniel Gardner helped lead USD to a key series win over Pacific, and a 2-2 overall record this past week. Gardner hit .500 (9-for-18) with four doubles, seven RBI and four runs scored. Gardner began the week a little slow, going 1-for-4 at UC Irvine. He then bounced back on the weekend, in game one against Pacific, he went 2-for-5 with one double and one RBI. Then in game two of a double-header, he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. He then capped the weekend with a thrilling 4-for-6, one double and four RBI performance in the series clinching win for USD.
SPRENGEL COMING ON STRONG DOWN THE STRETCH: Freshman lefty Nick Sprengel has been playing really well as of late. In his last five outings, he has tossed a combined 16.2 innings, had one start, and posted a team-best ERA of 2.16 . Sprengel has managed to record 16 strikeouts, while only issuing three walks. On the season, Sprengel is now 5-6 with a 5.54 ERA.
TOREROS IN HOME GAMES: Entering this final week of the regular season, USD has posted an 11-11 record when playing at Fowler Park. As a team, USD is hitting .285 at home, while opponents are hitting .293. ADAMS NAMED TO JOHNNY BENCH WATCH LIST: The University of San Diego’s sophomore catcher Riley Adams has been named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced. The Johnny Bench Award is given out annually to the nation’s best catcher, and the winner will be announced on June 20, 2015. Adams is one of 74 catchers nominated to the watch list, and he is off to a tremendous start to the season. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 18, 2016. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 6, 2016. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30, 2016.
TWO TOREROS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-WCC: Bryson Brigman and Colton Waltner represented the Toreros on the All-WCC team preseason team. Brigman was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American last season and is on many preseason All-American teams this year. Waltner led USD with 40 RBI in 2015 and was an All-WCC second team selection last year.
BRIGMAN TABBED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN: Sophomore shortstop Bryson Brigman has been named a preseason All-American by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game.
