SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego's All-American third baseman Kris Bryant has been selected No. 2 overall by the Chicago in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. Bryant becomes the highest Torero ever drafted, surpassing former Torero great and current Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz, who was taken No. 4 overall in the 2008 draft, and former Torero All-American John Wathan, who was taken No. 4 overall by the Royals in 1970.

"Kris had an incredible season at San Diego, hitting for both power and average," said Jason McLeod, Cubs Vice President of Scouting and Player Development. "He is a big, strong, athletic player, and we feel he has the attributes of someone who could fit into the middle of a lineup at the major league level. He has the ability to hit for average along with power to all parts of the park."

Bryant, a 6-5 junior from Las Vegas, Nev., is currently leading the nation in home runs with 31, which is no a new NCAA modern BBCORE era record, as well as a new USD single-season record. Bryant has also broken the career USD home run record and now has 54 in his three-year Torero career. He was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year, and is currently leading the nation in home runs (31), slugging percentage (.820), walks (66) and runs (80). Overall, Bryant finished the season hitting .329 with 75 hits, 13 doubles, three triples and 62 RBI.
