SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Former University of San Diego right-handed pitcher, AJ Griffin, has been called up by the Oakland A's and will get his first Major League start on Sunday June 24, 2012 against the San Francisco Giants.
Griffin has been really impressive in the AAA ranks for the Sacramento River Cats, as he comes into Sunday's contest with a 3-2 record, an impressive 2.81 ERA, and has 40 strikeouts in 51.1 innings of work. Opponents are only hitting .214 off the El Cajon native, and he has only issued seven walks to his 40 strikeouts.
In Griffin's final season at USD, the righty was a first-team All-WCC performer after posting a perfect 5-0 record in league games with a 57-13 strikeout to walk ratio and had an ERA of 3.26. Overall, Griffin was 8-3 with a 4.47 ERA and was second on the team in strike outs with 113. Griffin picked up a win in the Tempe Regional after a dominating performance against Milwaukee in which he allowed no runs on two hits in 5.0 innings of work.
