DEL MAR, Calif. - USD Baseball teamed up with The Miracle League of San Diego to help launch their fall season this past Saturday at Engel Family Field in San Dieguito Park by assisting with the celebration of Miracle League's Opening Day and Fan Fest and using baseball as vehicle to connect with youth this was more than just about baseball.
Over twenty USD baseball players volunteered to aid with event registration, the parade of teams and provided support and encouragement during home run derby. Every aspect of the day was simply about having fun and playing for the joy of the game. It was an atmosphere where the concept of winning or losing did not matter. Despite apparent disabilities, these players came out to the park with the widest smiles and were full of enthusiasm and passion. This was a pleasant and subtle reminder that children regardless of their challenges all have certain qualities to give to the world. It was an inspiring and rewarding event as well as a chance for student athletes to lend a hand in our community.
The Miracle League of San Diego is a charitable organization that provides special needs children with mental or physical challenges the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of playing baseball. The custom-designed field is completely flat with a cushioned, rubberized surface to accommodate wheelchair-bound or visually impaired players and is Southern California's
only field designed specifically to accommodate participants with special needs.
