SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team has been ranked as high as No. 14 in the Ping Baseball top-30 preseason poll. The Toreros are also ranked No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason top-40 poll.
USD will look to make its return to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth time in five years in 2010, after not making it last season. The Toreros return All-American caliber pitching in senior right-hander AJ Griffin, sophomore lefty Sammy Solis and junior right-hander Kyle Blair. On the offensive side of things, San Diego welcomes back the defending WCC Player of the Year, James Meador, along with All-WCC selections Zach Walters, Nick McCoy and Bryan Haar.
Six of San Diego's 2010 opponents also find themselves on the Top 40 including West Coast Conference opposition Pepperdine University at No. 34. Cal State Fullerton is the highest ranked opponent at No. 4 and is followed by Arizona State (5th), UC Irvine (8th), Rice (11th) and Oklahoma (25th).
The Toreros will open up the 2010 season Feb. 19 against Indiana University inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium with a 2 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
