Box Score

(San Diego, CA) - The USD Toreros (12-7; 2-2) saw their 7-0 home record snapped by a very good Santa Clara (13-6; 3-1) club today before 2,563 fans at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD saw a 31-23 halftime lead disappear in the second half as the entire team went cold in the shooting department, making just 2 of 22 shots. Santa Clara, which sports a roster that includes three players 6-10 or taller, had something to do with it as they dominated the rebounding statistics, 47-26, and played some solid defense. Gyno Pomare posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Toreros, and Brandon Johnson (13 points) and Ross DeRogatis (10 points) also reached double digits. Santa Clara was paced by 6-11 Sean Denison (16 points) and 6-10 center John Bryant (8 points, 15 rebounds). USD will host Saint Mary's on Monday in a 8:00 pm game that will be telecast on ESPNU.

In the first half it was USD that did the better job as they held the Broncos to just 10 field goals in taking the 31-23 intermission lead. Once again Pomare turned in a solid half as he totaled 14 points and 6 boards. In the 2nd half USD went up 34-26 on a three-pointer by DeRogatis, but Santa Clara battled back and went on a 13-0 run to take a 39-34 lead with 11:45 to go. Mitch Henke had three straight baskets in the middle of the run to pace the Bronce comeback. USD would get within 44-42 with 7:44 to go on a free throw by Nir Cohen, but a trey by Joey Kaempf, and back-to-back buckets inside by John Bryant put SCU up 51-42 with 3:31 to go. USD would get within 7 on two more occasions, but the Broncos would close out the game on an 8-1 run.

USD will look to get back to their winning ways on Monday when they host the Saint Mary's Gaels at 8 pm.
