Toreros Cruise Past Portland 92-58

(SAN DIEGO, CA) - The USD men's basketball team downed the visiting Portland Pilots 92-58 Thursday evening to improve to 10-7 on the season and 2-2 in the WCC. It was USD's first league game at home where the Toreros are now 7-1 this season and have now strung together five straight victories. With the loss Portland falls to 13-7 overall and 2-3 in the WCC standings. The 11th- ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, upset this evening in San Francisco (73-70) will be here Saturday. There are approximately 500 tickets left and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Ticket Office (619.260.7550).

For the second straight game USD had five players finish in double digit scoring with Brandon Gay leading the way with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Gay was followed by Floyd North who tossed in a career-best 15 points, Nick Lewis (12 points), Brice Vounang (10 points) and Corey Belser (10 points). Vounang has now reached double figures in all 17 games this season. Portland was paced by Ben Sullivan (14 points), Karl Aaker (13 points) and Pooh Jeter (13 points).

The Toreros won this game in the first half where they led 47-19 at intermission. USD held just a 15-8 lead midway through the first half, but a Belser bucket, a Gay three-point play and back-to-back three-pointers by North opened up the Toreros' lead to 26-13 with 8:03 left. From there USD would close out the final 8 minutes on a 21-6 run to put the contest away. USD shot 59.4% from the field in the first half (19-32) and 6-11 from three point range (54.5%). For the game USD hit on 57.6% of its shots and 52.6% from three-point range. Portland was held to 35% shooting in the 1st half (7-20) and 37.7% for the game (20-53). The Pilots managed to convert just 5-of-19 three-pointers. USD dominated the rebounding (41-27) and tallied 21 assists to 6 for UP.

 

 

Saturday's game against the Zags is a 4:00 p.m. start. USD will be looking for its first sellout of the season.
