SAN DIEGO – The USD Toreros turned in a solid defensive effort tonight in earning a hard-fought 66-58 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos. Junior guard Isaiah Wright scored a game-high 21 points and Juwan Gray added 14 points in his first start of the season. The win improved the team’s overall record to 14-7 and 5-4 in the WCC standings.

“It’s nice to get back on the winning side of things,” said head coach Lamont Smith. “I thought we turned in a solid defensive effort tonight and Isaiah Wright did a good job getting to the line. Santa Clara came in with an identical league record as us and we knew they were going to be scrappy and a tough matchup. We thought Juwan Gray earned his way into the starting lineup and he gave us a big lift tonight with his first start. We now have a quick turnaround and we’ll be back in the film room early to prepare for LMU this Saturday on the road in an early afternoon game.”

In the first half Juwan Gray, in his first start of the year, buried a three from the top to kick the game off. Isaiah Pineiro followed with four points in extending the start to 7-3. An Olin Carter lay-in pushed USD’s lead to 11-5 inside of 14 minutes. SCU’s Emmanuel Ndumanya three-point play inside pulled the Broncos to within 11-10. Gray’s second trey made it 18-12 with 7:11 left in the half. The Broncos would run off six straight with KJ Feagin capping the run with a three-pointer to knot the score at 18-all. A Carter trey from the right corner and three-point play off a driving lay-in by Pineiro made it 25-18 with 3:48 left. The Broncos answered with two buckets before Carter nailed a three from the right corner to make it 28-22. Isaiah Wright would add two free throws for the 30-24 halftime Torero lead.

Early in the second half a three-point play inside by Gray made it 37-28 with 14:36 left. Gray would add a bucket inside shortly after to make it 39-30. The Broncos would pull within 39-37 following a three-point basket inside from Henry Caruso. Wright would answer with a basket and three-ball from the left corner to give the Toreros a 44-47 advantage with 9:23 to go. Two free throws and a bucket from Alex Floresca gave the Toreros a seven point cushion (50-43) with 7:06 left. A step-back jumper at the free throw line from Wright, his 17th points of the game, made it 52-45 and Carter would add two charities to push it to a nine point lead.

USD entered the final three minutes of action holding a 56-50 advantage. At the 2:51 mark Tyler Williams would convert two free throws for a 58-50 lead. A Caruso bucket pulled the Broncos to within 60-53. A thunderous dunk from Gray with 1:20 left giving the Toreros a 62-53 lead, but Jarvis Pugh netted a long three to make it 62-56 with 1:04 to go. USD final four points came at the free throw line to help seal their ninth home victory.

For the game the Toreros shot 46.3% from the field (19-41) and canned 5-of-14 threes. USD was solid at the charity stripe making 23-of-29 and finished with a 34-30 edge in rebounding. Isaiah Pineiro (11 points, 7 rebounds) and Olin Carter III (10 points) also chipped in double-digit scoring. Carter did a great job on the Broncos’ leading scorer, KJ Feagin, by holding him to single digits at nine points. Emmanuel Ndumanya paced the Broncos with 15 points and Josip Vrankic notched a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds).

Up next for the Toreros is a trip to Los Angeles on Saturday, January 27, to take on the LMU Lions at Gersten Pavilion. The 1:00 p.m. contest is the WCC Game of the Week.
