SAN DIEGO, CA - The Toreros dropped a 72-53 decision to the visiting LMU Lions tonight at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Senior forward Brett Bailey scored a game-high 21 points, but it wasn’t enough on a night that saw LMU outplay the Toreros and get revenge from USD’s 69-62 win back on January 19th in Los Angeles.

In the first half LMU jumped out to a 15-5 lead on the strength of 6-for-9 shooting from the field. The Lions went on an 8-0 run powered by back-to-back threes from Brandon Brown. Frank Ryder would connect on two free throws, but LMU would answer with five straight points capped off by a three-ball from Jeffery McClendon to extend their lead to 20-7 at the 13:18 mark. A Cameron Neubauer three from the top and Juwan Gray bucket inside would pull the Toreros to within 20-12 at 10:47. A Brett Bailey three-ball would end two straight makes beyond the arc by the Lions to make it 26-15.

Heading into the final eight minutes of the first half the Lions would go on an 8-2 run to go up 34-17. LMU forward Steven Haney would provide four of the points on buckets near the basket. For USD, Bailey would keep the Toreros within range by scoring 10 straight team points over a five minute span to make it 36-22. Tyler Williams and Munis Tutu would trade three-pointers to extend the score to 39-25. LMU would close out the half with a 6-0 run that ended on a three-pointer from Brandon Brown before the halftime buzzer to make it 45-25. In the first 20 minutes of action Brett Bailey would lead the Toreros with 12 points and be matched by Brown for the Lions.

After the halftime break LMU (11-11, 4-7 WCC) would go up by as many as 21 points (47-26) early before seeing the Toreros pull to within 50-35 behind a dunk and two free throws by Bailey. With 12:14 to go a Bailey three would make it 55-42, but Brown would answer with a three of his own for the Lions, followed by a dunk from Trevor Manuel to push it to 60-42. LMU would go up by as many as 23 late before Jose Martinez and Mark Carbone would connect on threes in the closing two minutes for the final 72-53 score.

For the game LMU shot 53.1% from the field (26-49), 45.5% from three-point range (10-22) and 76,9% from the line (10-13). Guard Brandon Brown led the way with 18 points, followed by 13 from Steven Haney. LMU also out-rebounded the Toreros 30-25. The Toreros struggled from the field tonight making just 18-of-46 shots (18-46), but did manage to connect on 9-of-24 three-pointers.

The Toreros (11-12, 4-7 WCC) return to the JCP this Saturday, Feb. 4th, to take on the No. 18/19 Saint Mary’s Gaels in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
