Toreros fall to Portland 60-55
March 3, 2017

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS -- Despite 19 points and 8 rebounds from senior forward Brett Bailey, the USD Toreros dropped a 60-55 decision to Portland in tonight's WCC Tournament first round match-up. Bailey, an All-WCC Second Team performer, connected on 7-of-12 shots from the floor over 30 minutes of action. Cameron Neubauer and Olin Carter III followed him in double-digits with 11 points each. USD completes their year with an overall record of 13-18.

"I just want to talk about this guy (senior Brett Bailey) to the left of me," said head coach Lamont Smith. "This guy believed in us, in our system, in everything we were teaching, and never once wavered. A blue collar guy who just worked and worked and worked. He worked himself into a Second Team All-Conference performer. He's been a great ambassador, not only for our basketball program, but for our university. Outstanding student who is going to be successful in everything he does. And I'm just hoping our young guys are watching and learning. He was a great mentor for them."

In the first half the game was tied 5-all early on when senior Brett Bailey scored inside and connected on a three-ball from the right corner to give the Toreros a 13-6 lead at 16:36. Portland answered with consecutive baskets from Xavier Halinan and Philipp Hartwich, and two free throws from Rashad Jackson to pull to within 13-12. A Halinan lay-in at the 9:37 mark would push the Pilots to a 14-13 lead. A Cameron Neubauer jumper on the right baseline at 8:20 would snap an eight minute scoring drought, and Bailey would add his second three-pointer to give the Toreros an 18-14 advantage at 7:34.

Five straight points from Jazz Johnson, followed by two free throws from D'Marques Tyson gave Portland a 21-18 edge with 5:53 left. Jose Martinez would knot the score at 21-all with a three-ball from the left wing at 5:10 to end UP's 7-0 run. Johnson would answer with his own three, but Bailey would connect on back-to-back buckets to give the Toreros a 25-24 edge with 2:17 to go. Tyson connected on two three-pointers at the 2 minute mark and with 29 seconds left, and Halinan scored on a lay-in with six seconds to go, giving the Pilots a 32-29 lead at halftime. Bailey led all players with 12 points and 5 rebounds at the break.

In the second half Jazz Johnson scored UP's first seven points to Brett Bailey's four as the Pilots extended their lead to 39-33. Jarrel Marshall would add a Pilot jumper, but USD would answer with an 11-0 run to jump ahead 44-41 with 10:25 left. In the run Barrino nailed a jumper from the free throw line; Neubauer made consecutive threes and Olin Carter III bombed in a long three. Portland would go on a 10-1 run in taking a 51-45 lead. Brett Bailey would knock down a three at the 5:04 mark, but UP would answer with two baskets before Juwan Gray scored inside and was fouled. His free throw made it 55-51 Pilots with 3:47 to go.

Tyler Williams connected on a big three-ball with 2:10 to go to get USD within two at 56-52, but the Pilots made four free throws to USD's one down the stretch. Portland was paced by Jazz Johnson with 17 points. The Toreros out-rebounded the Pilots, 31-30, and converted 11-of-33 three-pointers.
