(San Diego, CA) - The USD men's basketball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Bill Grier, won their second and final exhibition today with a 71-62 victory over visiting Occidental College. Juniors Gyno Pomare and Brandon Johnson led the way as the Toreros finished 2-0 in their exhibition slate, and now will open their season at Hawaii on Nov. 9th. Pomare finished with a team-high 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor and 6-7 accuracy from the charity stripe. Johnson chipped in with 15 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. The Toreros led 32-28 at halftime and outscored the visitors by 5 points in the 2nd half.
Coach Grier was able to get eleven of his players action this afternoon. Sophomore forward Chris Lewis added 10 points in 20 minutes of action, and freshman forward Rob Jones looked solid with 8 points and 6 rebounds. De'Jon Jackson and Trumaine Johnson each tallied 7 points, while Clinton Houston and Nathan Lozeau chipped in with 4 each. Occidental, and NCAA Division III program that competes in the SCIAC, was paced by guard Connor Whitman (24 points), Jordan Schultz (12 points) and Huston Conti (12 points).
For the game USD shot 53.8% from the field (28-52), and 73.3% from the free throw line (11-15). The Toreros also held a slim edge in rebounding, 30-26.
