SAN JOSE, CALIF. – The USD Toreros turned in an impressive showing in their 2017-18 season opener with today’s 81-64 road win over San Jose State before 1,433 fans at the Event Center. Junior guard Isaiah Wright paced four Toreros in double digit scoring with a game-high 22 points to go with 7 assists and 5 steals. He was followed by Olin Carter III with 18 points, and forwards Isaiah Pineiro and Cameron Neubauer, each with 13 points.

“I thought we came out and dictated how the game was going to be played,” said USD head coach Lamont Smith. “We did a great job in the first half from pushing the ball to defending. We have a little more depth this year and will be able to play nine or ten guys. It was a great team win and you saw multiple guys do some great things and there is definitely room to improve. Isaiah (Wright) is our quarterback and we are going to go as he goes in a lot of ways. He sets the tone offensively by his push and he’s our defensive guy at the top. He’s just a tremendous basketball player and we are blessed to have him with our program.”

Wright jump started the Toreros by scoring eight of the team’s first ten points of the game as USD led 10-5 early on. With 8:31 left in the first half a Wright jumper would give USD its first double digit lead at 25-15. Back-to-back threes by Hunter Summy and Carter would push USD’s advantage to 16 points at 31-15. With 1:23 to go in the first half, Wright would steal the ball from the Spartans and his lay-in would put the Toreros up 49-29 as USD closed out the first half leading 51-29. At the break Wright had 17 points, followed by Pineiro (11) and Neubauer (10).

Early on in the second half the Toreros would increase their lead to as many as 30 points (64-34) on a dunk by freshman Yauhen Massalski. The host Spartans then made a run of their own and battled back to get within 12 points at 71-59 with 3:45 to go. The Toreros regrouped and played solid over the final four minutes of the game to close out their first victory of the season. Massalski (8 points, 4 rebounds) had a lay-in and a big blocked shot down the stretch and Wright closed out the game with USD’s final four points on lay-ins.

For the game the Toreros shot 57.4% from the field (31-54), an impressive 52.9% from beyond the arc (9-17) and dished out 15 assists while totaling eight steals. The Toreros begin a 3-game homestand on Nov. 15th with Robert Morris in town to begin the Grand Canyon Classic, a multi-team event.
