SAN DIEGO – The USD Toreros earned a hard-fought 65-53 win over a scrappy Robert Morris team tonight at the Jenny Craig Pavilion to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Junior guard Isaiah Wright turned in another solid outing with a game-high 17 points to go with 8 rebounds and 6 assists. He was followed by freshman Yauhen Massalski (11 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks) and Alex Floresca (10 points).

“We’ve been preaching defense since last spring and I told our team there are going to be nights when we don’t make shots and that we are going to have to rely on our defense to win games,” said head coach Lamont Smith. “And that is what happened tonight. I’m very happy with our team. Our guys came out and did a great job in every aspect of our defense.“

The Toreros got out of the gates slowly as they found themselves down 8-2 early in the contest. A three-pointer and two free throws from Cameron Neubauer pushed the Toreros ahead 16-14 at the 8:19 mark. Then it was Isaiah Wright’s turn as he canned a three-ball and then collected a steal and followed with a driving lay-in to give the Toreros a 26-21 advantage with 4:06 left. Wright and Olin Carter III would add buckets down the stretch to give the Toreros a 30-27 lead at the halftime break. Wright (11 points) and Carter (6 points) paced the way as USD struggled in the shooting department (37.5%) but outrebounded the Colonials 20-14.

In the second half a 9-0 run over a 2:02 span capped off by back-to-back buckets from Juwan Gray pushed USD’s lead to 42-33 at the 14:35 mark. Robert Morris answered with eight straight points by Leondre Washington to get within 42-41 with 12:28 left. Two free throws from Alex Floresca and an inside bucket from freshman Yauhen Massalski gave the Toreros a 46-41 lead. Two free throws from Neubauer with 7:06 to go gave USD its biggest lead at 52-43. A three ball from Carter from the right corner gave USD its first double-digit lead at 57-47. A Massalski dunk off an assist from Wright made it 63-49 to put the Toreros in control on their way to their second straight victory.

Despite struggling in the shooting department, the Toreros used their defense to earn tonight’s victory as they limited Robert Morris to 53 points and 33.3% shooting from the field (18-54). The Toreros out-rebounded the Colonials 44-32 and dished out 12 assists to RMU’s 5. Guard Leondre Washington paced Robert Morris (0-3) with 15 points.

The Toreros return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion this Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. tip against Norfolk State. Coach Smith added, “Norfolk State has a tradition of winning in their program and I believe they’ve been to the postseason the past six years. We expect a very scrappy group, similar to Robert Morris, to come in here. We’ll have to clean up a few things with a short turnaround and hopefully execute a little better offensively and continue to defend like we have been.”

Jack Cronin’s radio call can be heard on ESPN 1700AM. The game is also being televised by Fox Sports San Diego with Sam Farber and former Torero coach Brad Holland calling the action. This will be the second of four games that are part of the Grand Canyon Classic.
