SAN DIEGO --The Toreros used 11-0 runs to open each half tonight to help set the tone on their way to a 66-52 victory over the Little Rock Trojans. Junior forward Isaiah Pineiro totaled new season highs in points (20) and rebounds (7) to lead the way.

"I told our team this was a big maturity week for us since traditionally we haven't played well at home," said head coach Lamont Smith. "We played good in spurts this week but tonight was as close to playing 40 minutes of basketball in terms of our energy and our effort. I thought the game plan was outstanding. Coach (Sam) Scholl did an outstanding job and our guys really responded. I thought we played a tremendous game at both ends of the floor."

In the first half the Toreros jumped out to an 11-0 lead with Isaiah Pineiro (5 points), Olin Carter III and Juwan Gray each contributing a three-pointer in the opening run. USD's defense forced Little Rock into a four turnover, 0-for-6 shooting start before finally getting on the scoreboard at the 13:28 mark on a lay-in by K.J. Gilmore. Isaiah Wright and Cameron Neubauer would add their own three-balls to extend USD's lead to 18-5 with 7:55 left. Wright's fade-away three from the right corner made it 21-11 with just under four minutes. The Toreros would head into the break leading 28-19 with Wright leading the way with nine points.

The Toreros got off to another great start in the second half opening with another 11-0 run. A Carter jumper pushed USD's lead to 20 points at 41-21. Little Rock answered with an 8-0 run, but Neubauer, Wright and Hunter Summy buried three consecutive treys to make it 50-31. A Pineiro jumper from the left side would get the lead back to twenty at 54-34. Over the final eight minutes the closest the Trojans would get is twelve at 58-46.

For the game Pineiro was followed by Isaiah Wright (12 points) and Cameron Neubauer (11). The Toreros bombed in 10-of-25 three-pointers. Little Rock was paced by Cameron Corcoran (11 points) and Andre Jones (7 points, 10 rebounds).

The Toreros become just the third Torero Division I men's basketball team to start off the season 4-0. Clubs from 2013-14 and 1990-91 each opened their campaigns with identical 5-0 marks.

Following Thanksgiving the Toreros close out the Grand Canyon Classic with a Saturday contest at Grand Canyon (4-0). Game time is 6:00 p.m. (Pacific) with Ben Higgins filling in for Jack Cronin with the call on ESPN 1700AM. The game is also being televised on YurView, channel 4 in San Diego.
