SAN DIEGO -- The USD Toreros earned a solid 73-63 victory over the USF Dons to open up WCC play on a positive note. Junior forward Isaiah Pineiro scored a season-high 23 points to go with 8 rebounds and junior guard Isaiah Wright added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Olin Carter chipped in with 13 points and the Torero defense limited the Dons to just two made three-pointers.

"I thought we did a great job tonight," said head coach Lamont Smith. "It started with us coming back from Christmas. Our maturity that night at practice set the tone with the team really dialed in and focused. And we executed our game plan on defense. That is what we are going to need to do to be successful in this league. Both Isaiah's gave us a big game and I thought Alex Floresca's sub may have been one of the biggest subs in the game. He came in for a limited amount of time and really affected the game. With small ball and two centers on the bench he stayed patient and really helped us when he went in."

Pineiro scored a team-high 23 points.

In the first half the Toreros (10-3, 1-0 WCC) jumped out to a 9-5 lead on the strength of two three-pointers from Isaiah Pineiro. He would connect on his third trey to push the lead to 12-7 at the 13:37 mark before the Dons would score four straight to get within one at 12-11. Juwan Gray's driving lay-in, followed by a free throw after the media timeout would give USD a 19-15 edge with 7:44 to go. Isaiah Wright's lay-in would give USD a six point advantage, but Souly Boum would answer with an old-fashioned three-point play off a driving layup. Wright's three from the top would give the Toreros a 24-18 lead. A three-ball from Wright, followed by four straight free throws, gave USD its biggest lead of the half at 35-22 with 2:08 to play, and a Pineiro steal and slam dunk would make it 37-24 at the 1:21 mark. The Toreros would head into halftime leading 37-26 behind Pineiro's 15 points and Wright's 12.

After the break USD would extend its lead to 17 at 45-28 with 16:53 to go following a bucket by Wright. At the 12:47 mark it would still be a 17-point cushion following another Wright bucket that made it 51-34. USF would score 11 straight to pull within 51-45 with 9:14 to go with the run capped off by a three-pointer from Nate Renfro. Olin Carter would end the run with a three-pointer from the right side, then cash in on one free throw to push the lead back to 10 at 55-45. A Tyler Williams three ball from the left corner gave USD an 11-point lead, but Foster answered with an inside bucket. In the final minutes the Dons were fouling the stop the clock and it worked to some degree as a Souley Boum three with 1:13 to made it 70-63. USD would close out with three free throws to ice the game.

For the game USD shot 45.8% from the field (22-48), 44.4% from beyond the arc (8-18) and a solid 75.0% from the line (21-28). The Toreros out-rebounded the Dons 38-34 and finished with 9 blocked shots (7 coming in the first half). USF (8-6, 0-1 WCC) was paced by Boum with 21 points and Foster with 14 off the bench. The win was USD's first WCC opening victory since the 2012-13 campaign.

USD returns to the JCP this Saturday, December 30th, for a 1:00 p.m. contest against the Pepperdine Waves in the WCC Game of the Week.
