COACH GRIER (6TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the Pepperdine contest with a 9-8 mark... Last season's squad finished 13-18, but won 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the WCC Championships before falling to BYU by just 5 points... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by a 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His 2008-09 campaign (16-16) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Giselle & Ashley.
TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros will be trying to secure their fourth straight win, and looking to get off to a 3-0 WCC start for the first time since January of 2009... USD's road win over USF on Thursday snapped a 6-game Dons winning streak in the series... Sophomore point guard Christopher Anderson ranks among the nation's best in two NCAA statistical catagories - #21 in steals per game (2.44) and #26 in assists (5.9)... USD scoring leader Johnny Dee (14.9 ppg) is still the lone WCC player this season to garner two player of the week honors... Through 1 1/2 seasons (48 games), Dee has now made 118 three-pointers, which is 51.0% of his overall made baskets (231)... Over the past six games Chris Manresa is averaging a double-double in points & rebounds (11.1 ppg & 10.1 rpg)... With two double-doubles this season (10 points & 13 rebounds vs. James Madison & Morgan State), Manresa now owns 10 career double-doubles... Senior Ken Rancifer (Oakland, Calif.) was recognized by the San Diego Hall of Champions as an amateur star of the month for December... For all games this season, USD ranks 1st among WCC schools in scoring defense (63.8 ppg)... For WCC games only, USD ranks 1st in 3-point percentage (.447).
TOREROS HOLD OFF USF DONS 70-66: The Toreros (9-8, 2-0) defeated San Francisco (7-9, 0-3) 70-66 Thursday evening to stay undefeated in WCC play. Sophomore guard Johnny Dee led the way for the Toreros with 17 points (6-10 shooting) but it was senior guard Cameron Miles who sealed the victory for USD, making four clutch free throws down the stretch and scoring all 13 of his points in the second half. Christopher Anderson chipped in 10 points and Chris Manresa nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. The game started out close and was tied at 17 with 11:57 remaining, but the Dons couldn't keep up with the Toreros hot shooting. USD made eight of their first 10 three-point attempts and opened up a 46-32 lead at halftime behind 60.7% shooting from the field. The Dons closed the gap to seven points in the first three minutes of the second half. By the 12:14 mark, the Torero lead was down to one as USD clung to a 53-52 lead. However, Miles would connect on back-to-back threes and Anderson would score inside for a 61-52 lead. The Dons gave the Toreros a scare late in the game, closing the gap to two points with 27 seconds left. After a USF steal, Cody Doolin had a shot to take the lead with a three from the corner, but it rimmed out and the Dons were forced to foul. Miles knocked down two free throws to put the Toreros up four. Miles was 7-8 from the free-throw line and 4-4 in the final two minutes. After shooting 60.7% in the first half, the Toreros shot only 28.6% in the second half.
TOREROS ON THE ROAD: USD is currently 2-4 in "true" away games and including two neutral site contests in Las Vegas, 2-6 away from the Jenny Craig Pavilion... In the six "true" away games Johnny Dee is the only Torero averaging in double figures at 12.5 ppg.. Including the two neutral site games from the Vegas Holiday Classic, Dee averages 13.1 ppg, and is followed by senior Chris Manresa at 9.8 ppg and 8.0 rpg... Four of the six losses have been by seven points or less - Montana (67-66), Stephen F. Austin (56-51), Oregon State (86-79) and James Madison (62-59).
SCOUTING THE PEPPERDINE WAVES: The Pepperdine Waves (9-7; 1-2 WCC) are coming off a 76-51 loss at BYU this past Thursday... In the contest the Waves found themselves up 35-30 at the intermission break, only to be outscored 46-16 over the final 20 minutes of play... Sophomore guard Jordan Baker scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, but no other Waves' player reached double figures... Pepperdine owns a home record of 5-2, and won their most recent contest there on January 5th against Portland (54-47)... Freshman Stacy Adams paced the win over Portland with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Waves overcame three different 12 point deficits in the 2nd half... Their two home losses are to Gonzaga (78-62; Jan. 3rd) and Central Michigan (80-77; Dec. 16)... Pepperdine has three players averaging in double-digit scoring - senior guard Lorne Jackson (14.1 ppg), freshman forward Stacy Davis (10.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and Baker (10.8 ppg)... For all games, Pepperdine is averaging 63.2 ppg and 35.4 rpg, while giving up 64.2 ppg and 32.8 rpg on average to its opponents... Head Coach Marty Wilson (Pepperdine, '89) is in his 2nd season as head coach and owns a mark of 19-26... He was a USD assistant for two seasons (1996-98).
