GAME #19: The USD Toreros (10-8; 3-0 WCC) look to continue their winning ways when they host the Loyola Marymount Lions (8-9; 1-3 WCC) on Wednesday, January 16th. Game time is 7:03 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
SERIES RECORD: This is the 85th meeting between USD and LMU with the visiting Lions owning a 43-41 advantage... USD won the last meeting, a 60-57 road win over LMU on February 23rd... Darian Norris canned four three-pointers over the final 10 minutes of play for his 12 points in the win, and Simi Fajemisin converted two free throws with 15 seconds left for the three-point win... LMU's Anthony Ireland's three-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed out... The LMU LIons won the game played in San Diego last January 7th with a 79-68 win... USD was paced by Johnny Dee with 24 points (6-12 in threes) and Christopher Anderson (13 points, 8 assists, 4 steals)... Drew Viney paced four Lions in double digits with 20 points.
RADIO-TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on The Mighty 1090 or ESPN 1700 AM with Andy Masur (6th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game shows air 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Wednesday's game airs on The Mighty 1090. The game will also be on Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Barry Tompkins & Jon Crispin).

COACH GRIER (6TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the LMU contest with a 10-8 mark... Last season's squad finished 13-18, but won 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the WCC Championships before falling to BYU by just 5 points... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by a 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His 2008-09 campaign (16-16) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Giselle & Ashley.
TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros will be trying to secure their fifth straight win, and looking to get off to a 4-0 WCC start for the first time since January of 2009... USD is 7-3 over its last ten games with Johnny Dee (15.6 ppg) and Ken Rancifer (12.6 ppg) leading the way offensively... The Toreros are 4-1 over their last five games with Dee the lone Torero averaging double digits at 16.8 ppg... With its 3-0 WCC start the Toreros are averaging 64.3 ppg while limiting opponents to a league best 55.3 ppg for scoring defense... USD also ranks first among WCC teams for overall games played in scoring defense (63.1)... In Saturday's road win at Pepperdine, USD's trio of seniors accounted for 32 of the team's 62 points... Following Johnny Dee's team-best 17.0 ppg average in the team's two road wins this past weekend, the Toreros received solid play from their trio of seniors - Ken Rancifer (11.5 ppg), Cameron Miles (10.5 ppg), and Chris Manresa (8.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg)... Over USD's current streak of four straight wins, Miles has played a key role by averaging 9.5 ppg... USD's road win over USF last Thursday snapped a 6-game Dons winning streak in the series... Sophomore point guard Christopher Anderson ranks among the nation's best in two NCAA statistical catagories - #15 in steals per game (2.47) and #27 in assists (5.8)... USD scoring leader Johnny Dee (15.0 ppg) ranks #18 in the NCAA in free throw percentage (.906; 48-53).
HOME SWEET HOME: USD is 7-2 at home this season and have won their last five contests played at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.. The Toreros are averaging 72.0 ppg while limiting opponents to 62.9 ppg... Johnny Dee averages 16.4 ppg at the JCP, and is followed by Chris Anderson (10.3 ppg)... Ken Rancifer (9.9 ppg) and Chris Manresa (9.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg) just miss the double digit scoring mark.
TOREROS IN THE COMMUNITY: Like all USD athletic teams, each year the USD men's basketball program gets involved with numerous community service outreach programs... One group they have established a unique relationship with is the Poway Youth Basketball League's Challenged Division... The Challenged Division of the Poway Youth Basketball League is open to all players with intellectual disabilities... The division has been around for over 15 years and has grown from a handful of players to more than 75 athletes... For the third straight year the USD team held a clinic on opening night (January 8th) at Meadowbrook Middle School from 6-8 pm... The Torero coaches and players organized the group into six stations and rotated them around to different baskets for a variety of drills... At the end of the evening some of the PYBL players got to go head-to-head against USD players in some fun one-on-one games... The PYBL Challenged Division group will be attending USD's home game on January 26th against Santa Clara, and will get to play a game as part of the halftime activities.
SCOUTING THE LOYOLA MARYMOUNT LIONS: The LMU Lions come to San Diego with an overall record of 8-9 and league mark of 1-3... They split a pair of conference home games last week with an 84-80 come-from-behind win over Santa Clara on Thursday, followed by a 68-64 loss to Portland on Saturday... Junior guard Anthony Ireland paced the Lions in both games, totaling 29 points and 8 assists against the SCU Broncos, followed by 22 points against the UP Pilots... Senior Ashley Hamilton chipped in with 17 points in each of the two contests last week...Ireland owns a team-best 20.8 points per game average (2nd in WCC), and is followed by Hamilton (15.1 ppg) and junior Ayodeji Egbeyemi (10.5 ppg)... The Lions opened league play with road losses at BYU (92-51) and Saint Mary's (74-61)... This season the Lions are 2-5 in "true" away games and 3-6 overall away from Gersten Pavilion... LMU was picked 4th, one spot ahead of USD, in the 2012-13 WCC Preseason Coaches Poll... Head Coach Max Good (Fifth Year) owns an LMU record of 61-84 (23-39 WCC)...
