Toreros Battle at Saint Mary's But Fall Short, 84-73.
MORAGA, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's basketball team played No. 16 Saint Mary's tough on their home floor Thursday night at McKeon Pavilion, but the Toreros were unable to pull out the victory, falling to the Gaels 84-73.

SERIES RECORD: This is the 74th meeting between USD and Saint Mary's College with the Gaels owning a 38-35 edge... SMC won both games last year, including the last meeting played in Moraga on February 2nd, 2012 by the score of 84-73... Chris Manresa made 10-11 shots to lead USD with a career-high 25 points against the 16th-ranked Gaels... On January 5th, 2012 in San Diego the Gaels escaped with a 78-72 victory over the Toreros... USD was paced by the freshman backcourt tandem of Johnny Dee (22 points) and Christopher Anderson (16 points, 6 assists).

RADIO-TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on The Mighty 1090 or ESPN 1700 AM with Andy Masur (6th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game shows air 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Thursday's game airs on The Mighty 1090. The game will also be on CSN-Bay Area and TWC-Sportsnet (Mel Kuiper and Stan Morrison).

Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the Saint Mary's contest with a 11-9 mark and 4-1 WCC record... Last season's squad finished 13-18, but won 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the WCC Championships before falling to BYU by just 5 points... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by a 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His 2008-09 campaign (16-16) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros saw their five-game winning streak and 4-0 WCC start end in Provo this past Saturday with the team's 74-57 loss at BYU... USD was paced by the sophomore backcourt tandem of Johnny Dee (15 points; 5-10 in threes) and Christopher Anderson (13 points, 7 assists)... Both Dee and Anderson are in the NCAA national rankings - Dee is 10th in free throw percentage (.912; 52x57) and Anderson is 14th in steals (2.53) and 25th in assists (5.8)... Freshman center Jito Kok matched his season-high with 4 blocked shots at BYU (also vs. Siena) and now has 35 on the season (USD's Division I freshman record is 38 by Scott Thompson, 1983-84)... Among WCC teams for all games, USD ranks 1st in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.306), and 2nd in scoring defense (64.0) and blocked shots (4.3)... For all games, USD players that rank in the top-10 among WCC statistics include Johnny Dee - 2nd in FT% (.912), 3rd in 3-pointers made per game (2.3), 8th in scoring (15.0), and 10th in 3-point percentage (.397); Christopher Anderson - 2nd in steals (2.5), 3rd in assists (5.8), and 6th in assist-turnover ratio (2.1); Ken Rancifer - 7th in 3-point percentage (.411), and Jito Kok - tie for 1st in blocked shots (1.8)... Dee (14.4 ppg) and Anderson (10.6 ppg) lead the Toreros in scoring for WCC games.

TOREROS ON THE ROAD: The Toreros are 3-5 in "true" away games, and 3-7 overall in games played away from the Jenny Craig Pavilion... In its eight "true" away games, Johnny Dee is the lone Torero to average in double figures at 13.4 ppg... Including its two neutral site contests at the Vegas Holiday Hoops event, Dee (13.7 ppg) is joined by Ken Rancifer (10.0 ppg) in the double-digit scoring column... USD's road wins came at Southern Utah (67-53) on Dec. 1st, at San Francisco (70-66) on Jan. 10th and at Pepperdine (62-50) on Jan. 12th.

SCOUTING THE SAINT MARY'S GAELS: The SMC Gaels improved to 15-4 overall and 4-1 in WCC play with back-to-back road wins against BYU (70-69 on Jan. 16) and Portland (60-38 on Jan. 19)... Including their 78-72 home win over USF on January 12th, Saint Mary's is currently riding a 3-game winning streak... In the win at BYU, senior guard Matthew Dellavedova converted a buzzer beating three-pointer; he finished with 18 points and 8 assists... Stephen Holt led the way with a team-best 22 points... In win at Portland the Gaels put the clamps on the UP Pilots, holding them to just 38 points and 23.3 percent shooting... Holt led the way again with a team-high 13 points, followed by forward Brad Waldow (12 points) and Dellavedova (11 points, 6 assists)... The Gaels totaled 11 steals against Portland with forward Beau Levesque leading the way with 4... For the season Saint Mary's is averaging 77.8 ppg and 36.6 rpg while limiting opponents to 65.6 ppg and 27.9 rpg... SMC is a perfect 10-0 at home this season (16-1 last year)... Through five WCC games the team is being paced by Holt (16.2 ppg) and Dellavedova (15.8 ppg, 6.2 apg)... Head Coach Randy Bennett is in his 12th season...
