Olin Carter scores 27 in 74-66 win over Pepperdine
Junior captain Olin Carter III buried seven three-pointers on his way to a season-high 27 points as the Toreros held off a pesky Pepperdine squad 74-66 in front of 1,521 fans at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

GAME #25: The San Diego Toreros (15-9, 6-6 WCC), under the direction of head coach Lamont Smith, head to Malibu this coming Thursday, February 8th, for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Firestone Fieldhouse against the Pepperdine Waves.

SERIES RECORD: This is the 107th meeting between USD and Pepperdine with the Waves owning a 62-44 advantage... The Toreros won the first meeting at the JCP this season back on Dec. 30th by the score of 74-66 (Olin Carter III, 27 points, 7 threes)... Last season the Waves won 65-60 at the JCP (Feb. 11, 2017)... Cameron Neubauer paced the Toreros with 13 points and 12 rebounds... USD won 76-68 in Malibu (Jan. 7, 2017)... Tyler Williams scored a career-high 20 points with Juwan Gray adding 11 points & 14 rebounds.

RADIO/TV/STREAM: All USD games are broadcast on either The Mighty 1090AM or ESPN 1700AM with Jack Cronin (4th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game show airs 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Cronin's call on Thursday will air on ESPN 1700 AM. The game will be televised by Spectrum SportsNet (Dan Hellie & Doug Christie) and also air on NBC Sports California+ and (out-of-market).

WCC STANDINGS (as of Feb. 5): Saint Mary's College (12-0 WCC, 23-2), Gonzaga (11-1, 21-4), BYU (7-5, 18-7), Pacific (7-5, 12-13), San Diego (6-6, 15-9), San Francisco (5-7, 13-12), Santa Clara (5-7, 8-16), Portland (4-8, 10-15), LMU (2-10, 7-16), Pepperdine (1-11, 4-20).

WCC PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Toreros were picked to place sixth in the 2017-18 Preseason WCC Coaches Poll. Saint Mary's is first with 81 points (9 first place votes). Rounding out the top-5 is Gonzaga (73 points, 1), BYU (62), USF (59) and Santa Clara (44). Following San Diego (37) is Pepperdine (30), Pacific (24), Portland (21) and LMU (19).

COACH SMITH (3RD YEAR): Coach Lamont Smith (San Diego, 1998) is in his third year at the helm of the Torero basketball program. This year's team was the first Torero team to reach eight wins in its first 10 contests, and had extended their best start to 12 wins in the first 15 games (since USD joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80). The Toreros enter the Pepperdine game with a 15-9 record, and the 15 wins is a new personal best for Smith. Prior to USD, Smith was at New Mexico where he was the Associate Head Coach. Prior to UNM he spent time at Washington, Arizona State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and Saint Louis. Smith was a member of the USD men's basketball team from 1994-99. He started all 27 games his senior year in 1998-99 for the 18-9 Toreros. He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from 1997-99. Smith earned a BA degree in Communications in 1998. Lamont and his wife Kimberly have two daughters -- Payton and Olivia.

A LOOK AHEAD: USD continues its road swing with a game at Santa Clara on Saturday, February 10. Game time at the Leavey Center is 1:00 pm ( USD won the first meeting in San Diego back on January 25th by the score of 66-58.

* The Toreros continue to be one of the top defensive teams in the country as they rank #2 in 3-point FG% defense (.286), #22 in FG% defense (.401) and #22 in scoring defense (64.8)... USD has also protected the rim and is tied for second in the WCC for blocked shots per game (4.2).

* Junior guard Olin Carter now has 962 career points (84 games/81 starts; 11.4 ppg career average)... He needs just 38 more points to become the program's 25th player to join the 1,000 point club... His 197 career made threes ranks 3rd all-time and his 560 three-point attempts ranks second... Johnny Dee owns both career marks (333-831).

* Among WCC players, Isaiah Wright is #3 in assists (5.4), #4 in steals (1.4), #7 in scoring (14.3) and #14 in rebounding (5.4); Isaiah Pineiro is #6 in scoring (16.1), #8 in FT% (.812), #9 in blocked shots (0.9), #11 in rebounding (6.0) and FG% (.500); Olin Carter III is #3 in 3-pointers made per game (2.5) and #18 in scoring (11.9); Tyler Williams is #2 in FT% (.889), Yauhen Massalski is #4 in blocked shots per game (1.3) and Juwan Gray is #9 in blocked shots per game (0.9).

* The Toreros are 6-5 away from the JCP with wins coming against SJSU (81-64), Grand Canyon (72-62), New Mexico State (65-60), Colorado (69-59), Portland (81-74, ot) and LMU (89-82)... In away games USD is paced by Isaiah Wright (17.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 3.9 assists, 1.3 steals), Isaiah Pineiro (16.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Olin Carter III (12.7 ppg)... USD limits opponents to 40.0 FG% and 26.6% from 3-point land (49-184).

* USD's second half rally came up just short in a hard-fought 65-62 home loss to Saint Mary's (Feb. 3)... Isaiah Pineiro scored a team-high 24 points and Isaiah Wright scored the team's final eight points over the final 1:20... No. 13 SMC was paced by center Jock Landale (34 points, 18 rebounds).

* The Toreros battled No. 14 Gonzaga tough in Spokane (Feb. 1) but came away with a 69-59 loss... Olin Carter III scored a game-high 21 points (5-11 in threes) but the Toreros as a team struggled from the field (20-61, .328)... USD's defense held GU to 18 points below their average but allowed the Zags to score 24 points on second chance attempts and 38 points in the paint... Jonathan Williams paced GU with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

* Junior Isaiah Pineiro was named WCC player of the week (Jan. 29) after leading the Toreros to two straight wins by averaging 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in victories over Santa Clara (66-58) and LMU (89-82)... He totaled new season-highs in points (29) and assists (9) against LMU... He converted 14-of-18 shots (.778) over the two games.

SCOUTING THE PEPPERDINE WAVES: The Waves dropped both contests this past week, losing 85-76 in overtime at Portland on Thursday, followed by an 81-72 home loss to Pacific on Saturday... Pepperdine has lost three straight since winning their lone WCC contest on January 25th against LMU (71-70)... In their most recent outings against Portland and Pacific, the Waves were paced by guard Eric Cooper, Jr. (19 points in each game)... Season leaders include Kameron Edwards (15.0 ppg, 5.9 rpg; 15 games), Cooper (14.1 ppg) and guard Colbey Ross (14.1 ppg, 5.5 apg)... As a team the Waves are averaging 71.4 ppg and shooting 44.9% from the field; at the other end they are giving up 80.4 ppg and 32.5 rpg on average to its opponents... Head Coach Marty Wilson is in his 7th year.
