GAME #27: The USD Toreros (13-13; 6-5 WCC) head to the bay area this week for a pivotal league game at Santa Clara (17-8; 5-5 WCC) on Thursday, February 14th. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. at the Leavey Center (4,700 capacity).
SERIES RECORD: This is the 74th meeting between USD and Santa Clara with the Broncos owning a 40-33 advantage... SCU won this year's meeting at the JCP on Jan. 26th by the score of 64-50... Ken Rancifer was the lone Torero in double-digits with 14 points... USD won both games last season - at SCU on Jan. 12th (75-62; Johnny Dee with 26 points) and at the JCP on Feb. 4th (70-65; Johnny Dee with 19 points & Christopher Anderson with 13 points).
RADIO-TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on The Mighty 1090 or ESPN 1700 AM with Andy Masur (6th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game shows air 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Thursday's game airs on The Mighty 1090. The game will also have coverage on WCC Digital TV (Dave Lewis & Kris Johnson).

COACH GRIER (6TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the SCU contest with a 13-13 mark and 6-5 WCC record... Last season's squad finished 13-18, but won 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the WCC Championships before falling to BYU by just 5 points... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by a 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His 2008-09 campaign (16-16) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Giselle & Ashley.
TORERO TIDBITS: Having just played four league games in eight days, the Toreros now play three straight on the road beginning with a pivotal game this week at Santa Clara on Thursday... Coming out 2-2, the Toreros can take a lot of positives from this recent stretch - a tough 65-63 loss to then No. 7 Gonzaga; a hard-fought 69-68 overtime win at LMU; a huge 74-68 home win over BYU; closed out with a 10-point loss to Saint Mary's inwhich the Toreros were down just 2 at halftime... For the season Johnny Dee is averaging a team-best 15.0 ppg (8th best in WCC)... Dee is 1st in the WCC in free throw percentage at 89.3% (#11 in NCAA)... Christopher Anderson ranks 2nd in the WCC in steals at 2.3 (#19 NCAA) and 4th in assists at 5.6 (#30 NCAA)...The Toreros continue to rank 1st among WCC teams in three-point percentage defense (.313), 2nd in blocked shots (4.2) and are now 3rd in scoring defense (65.3)... This season on the road the Toreros are 4-6 in "true" away games and 4-8 overall away from the JCP... In WCC road contests the Toreros are 3-2 with Dee leading the way at 14.4 ppg, followed by Ken Rancifer (9.8 ppg).
TOREROS RUN OUT OF GAS AGAINST SAINT MARY'S, 74-64: The USD Toreros, having played their fourth game in eight days, dropped a hard-fought 74-64 decision to the visiting Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday. Torero guard Johnny Dee poured in 19 points and matched his career-high of 7 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Gaels pulled away in the 2nd half. San Diego falls to 13-13 overall and 6-5 in the WCC standings, while Saint Mary's improves to 21-4 and 10-1 in league. Saint Mary's was paced by senior guard Matthew Dellavedova with 19 points and 7 assists. He got help on the inside from forward Brad Waldow with 18 points. For USD, Dee was followed by guard Christopher Anderson with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in 38 minutes of action.In the first half Saint Mary's jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but the Toreros regrouped and battled back on the strength of two three-pointers by Ken Rancifer. USD took its first lead of the game at 21-20 on a layup by Dennis Kramer with 7:05 to go. USD would inch ahead by two points on two occasions, the last coming on a John Sinis three-pointer with 3:40 left to make it 28-26. Late in the half a Chris Manresa dunk tied the score at 34-all, but Saint Mary's came out of a timeout with three seconds left to convert a Brad Waldow layup before the buzzer for a 36-34 advantage. In the 2nd half SMC extended their lead to 10 points in the first five minutes at 47-37. From there the closest USD would get is three points at 47-44 on a Dee layup at the 13:32 mark. The rest of the way it was pretty much all Saint Mary's as they would go up by as many as 17 points (74-57) on a Matt Hodgson three-pointer before settling for the 10 point win. Jito Kok (8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks) and John Sinis (8 points) also played well for USD.
SCOUTING THE SANTA CLARA BRONCOS: The SCU Broncos (17-8, 5-5 WCC) had a bye this past Saturday... In their last game on Feb. 7th, they dropped a 84-63 home decision to the visiting Saint Mary's Gaels... Guard Evan Roquemore led four Broncos in double-digit scoring with 18 points... He was followed by forward Raymond Cowels (14), forward Marc Trasolini (13) and guard Kevin Foster (10)... From January 17th thru January 31st, SCU won five straight games before losing last two, with the other loss coming at BYU on Feb. 2nd (96-79)... For the season, senior guard Kevin Foster leads four Broncos in double-digit scoring at 18.6 ppg (3rd in WCC)... He is followed by senior foward Marc Trasolini (15.6 ppg, 8.3 rpg), guard Evan Roquemore (12.9 ppg) and forward Raymond Cowels (10.0 ppg)... SCU averages 76.2 points per game while limiting opponents to 67.2 ppg... Among WCC teams for all games played this season, SCU ranks first in turnover margin (+3.5) and blocked shots (5.0 per game)... For WCC games only, Foster is averaging 19.2 ppg... Santa Clara is 11-5 in home games this season... Head Coach Kerry Keating is in his 6th year directing the Bronco program.
