GAME #29: The San Diego Toreros (14-14, 5-10 WCC) will close out their regular-season schedule with a three-game homestand beginning this Thursday, February 20th, with a game against the Portland Pilots (15-11, 7-7 WCC). Tip-off is schedule for 6:05 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion (5,100 capacity).

Toreros hold on for 65-63 win over Portland Pilots
(Portland, OR) - Junior guard Johnny Dee finished with a team-high 21 points as the Toreros earned a hard-fought 65-63 over the Portland Pilots. Dee calmly sank two free throws with 7.4 seconds to go to give the Toreros a 65-61 advantage to make UP's lay-up at the end of the game a non-factor. Dee extended his streak of consecutive made free throws to 47.The win improved USD's record to 12-10 on the season (3-6 WCC). The host Pilots, who were led by Kevin Bailey (21 points), fall to 12-9 and 4-5 WCC. Torero senior forward Dennis Kramer also had a big game as he notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

SERIES RECORD: This is the 74th meeting between USD and Portland with the Toreros owning a 45-28 series edge... USD won the first meeting this season back on Jan. 25th with a 65-63 win (Johnny Dee, 21 points including 2 free throws with 7.4 seconds left)... USD has won four of five in the series as these two teams split their games last season - the Pilots won in Portland 70-67 (Feb. 21st), while the Toreros won at the JCP by the score of 61-50 (Christopher Anderson, 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals).

RADIO-TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on ESPN 1700AM with Andy Masur (7th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game shows air 15 minutes prior to tip-off. COACH GRIER (7TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his seventh season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the Portland game with a 14-14 record, and the team's 7-1 mark thru the first eight games was only matched by the 2000-01 Torero team since San Diego joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... Coach Grier owns five of USD's six program wins over top-25 programs... Last year's squad finished 16-18 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the WCC Tournament where they just missed out on advancing to the title game... The Toreros were playing their best basketball down the stretch highlighted by two wins over BYU.

TORERO TIDBITS: #1-The Toreros lead the WCC in scoring defense (64.2 ppg) and second in overall field goal percentage defense (.420). #2-The Toreros return to the JCP where they own a record of 7-6 and four Toreros are averaging in double-digit scoring - Johnny Dee (16.2 ppg), Duda Sanadze (14.2 ppg), Dennis Kramer (12.7 ppg) and Christopher Anderson (10.2 ppg)... As a team USD averages 69.2 ppg while limiting its opponents to 62.8 points. #3- In Saturday's win at Pacific the Toreros held the Tigers to a season low 55 points... Pacific, which scored 84 against the Toreros back on February 1st at the JCP, entered Saturday's game averaging 76.1 points. #4- The Torero bench gave USD a huge lift in Saturday's win as they combined to outscore Pacific's reserves 29-12... Nick Kerr led with way with a career-high 12 points as he canned 4-of-5 threes in the first half in sparking USD to a 44-23 intermission lead... Kerr was followed by reserves Thomas Jacobs (6 points, 5 rebounds), Chris Sarbaugh (6 points) and Simi Fajemisin (5 points, 5 rebounds).#5- Junior point guard Christopher Anderson came up one assist shy of a rare triple double against Pacific as he finished with 10 points, a career-best 10 rebounds and 9 assists... Eight of his assists came in the first half with three setting up Kerr... Anderson continues to lead the WCC in assists (5.9 apg) and ranks 18th in the nation entering the week... He is second all-time among Toreros in this department with 510... He is 16 dishes away from setting a new all-time Torero mark of 526... He is also 2nd all-time at USD with 179 career steals, and needs 21 more to set a new all-time mark of 200... Both of the current all-time marks (525 assists & 199 steals) are held by Brandon Johnson. #6- Junior guard Johnny Dee is 3rd in the WCC in scoring (17.1 ppg) for all games... He was recognized by the San Diego Hall of Champions as an amateur star of the month for January, as well as a Capital One District VIII Academic All-American... With 1,417 career points, he ranks #5 all-time among USD scorers and is closing in on #4 Nick Lewis (1,453 points; 2001-06)... He also has a legitimate shot at the school record for points scored in three seasons (#3 Stan Washington with 1,472 points, 1971-74)... He owns a school-record 238 career makes beyond the three-point arc, and this season ranks 15th in the nation in 3-point accuracy (.439; 79x180) ... He continues to lead the WCC in free throw accuracy (.933, 97-104) and ranks 5th in the nation. #7- Sophomore center Jito Kok leads the Toreros in blocked shots with 50 (1.8 blocks per game, 3rd in WCC)... Against Pacific (Feb. 1st) he matched his career-high of 5 blocks he had set at Portland (Jan. 25th)... Last year as a freshman Kok tied the USD single season mark with 55 blocked shots... He needs 6 more blocks to set a new USD single season mark of 56, and now owns 105 career blocks - school record for career blocks is 189 (Scott Thompson, 1983-87). #8- Sophomore guard Duda Sanadze ranks second on the team in scoring at 13.1 ppg (17th in WCC)... His 23 point effort against Santa Clara was two points off his season-best (25 @ SCU)... He has scored in double figures 20 times with four contests of 20 or more points. #9- USD's top four scorers average in double-digits and account for 76.3% of the team's scoring (1,434 of 1,878 points) - Johnny Dee (17.1 ppg, 480 points), Duda Sanadze (13.1 ppg, 355 points), Dennis Kramer (11.8 ppg, 329 points) and Christopher Anderson (9.6 ppg, 270 points). #10-Over the past five games in which USD has gone 1-4, the Toreros have been paced in scoring by Johnny Dee (17.2 ppg), Duda Sanadze (15.8 ppg) and Dennis Kramer (12.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg)... As a team during this stretch USD is averaging 64.8 ppg/30.2 rpg, and giving up 70.2 ppg/31.2 rpg.

SCOUTING THE PORTLAND PILOTS: The Portland Pilots (15-11, 7-7 WCC) come to town riding a two-game winning streak and having won three of their last four league contests... This past week they earned home wins against Loyola Marymount (71-64) and Pepperdine (74-62)... Senior forward Ryan Nicholas (16 points & 9 rebounds) and junior center Thomas van der Mars (14 points & 10 rebounds) led the way against LMU as the Pilots overcame a 36-29 halftime deficit... In Saturday's win over Pepperdine it was these same two players leading the way - Nicholas (21 points) and van der Mars (15 points)... For the season the Pilots are being led in scoring by junior guard Kevin Bailey (16.5 ppg), with Nicholas (13.0 ppg, 9.1 rpg) and van der Mars (12.7 ppg) also averaging in double-digits... Bailey also leads the team in WCC scoring (15.8 ppg) followed by van der Mars (13.0 ppg) and Nicholas (12.5 ppg & 8.6 rpg)... The Pilots own the only league win to date against Gonzaga (82-73) and also defeated BYU in triple overtime (114-110)... In the contest against USD earlier this season the Pilots received 21 points from guard Kevin Bailey... Head Coach Eric Reveno is in his 8th season at the helm of the Pilots program (111-137).
