GAME #30: The USD Toreros (13-16; 6-8 WCC) close out their regular-season schedule with two home games this week against San Francisco and Pepperdine. The USF Dons (13-15, 6-9 WCC) come to town for a 6:00 p.m. game on Thursday, February 28th at the JCP.

Toreros Hold Off USF 70-66
The University of San Diego men's basketball team (9-8, 2-0) defeated San Francisco (7-9, 0-3) 70-66 Thursday evening to stay undefeated in WCC play.

SERIES RECORD: This is 70th meeting between the USD Toreros and USF Dons with San Francisco owning a slim 35-34 advantage... The Toreros snapped USF's six-game winning streak in the series with this season's 70-66 win in San Francisco back on January 10th... Johnny Dee led the way for the Toreros with 17 points (6-10 shooting), but it was senior guard Cameron Miles who sealed the victory for USD, making four clutch free throws down the stretch and scoring all 13 points of his points in the 2nd half.

RADIO-TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on The Mighty 1090 or ESPN 1700 AM with Andy Masur (6th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game shows air 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Saturday's game airs on The Mighty 1090. The game will also be televised on Fox Sports San Diego (Mike Pomeranz, Jud Buechler & Cheryl Gorman).

A LOOK AHEAD: Following Thursday's game with San Francisco, the Toreros close out their regular-season slate against the Pepperdine Waves on Saturday (Mar. 2nd, 12 noon, TWC-Sportsnet). It will be Senior Day for a trio of Toreros - Chris Manresa, Cameron Miles and Ken Rancifer.

COACH GRIER (6TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the USF contest with a 13-16 mark and 6-8 WCC record... Last season's squad finished 13-18, but won 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the WCC Championships before falling to BYU by just 5 points... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by a 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His 2008-09 campaign (16-16) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Giselle & Ashley.

TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros close out their regular season slate this week with two games at the Jenny Craig Pavilion... A win over the USF Dons on Thursday will guarantee the Toreros the No. 5 seed heading into the 2013 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships... On Thursday the Toreros will be looking to snap a four-game skid that began back on February 9th with a 74-64 home loss to Saint Mary's... For the season the Toreros are being paced by Johnny Dee's 14.6 points per game (8th in WCC) and his league-best 89.9% from the free throw line... Ken Rancifer joins Dee in the double-digit column at 10.0 ppg (25th in WCC)... Point guard Christopher Anderson continues to rank among the league's best in steals (2.18, 2nd WCC; #28 NCAA) and assists (5.5, 4th in WCC; #37 NCAA)... Closing in on the end of his second season, Anderson has 59 games under his belt with 309 assists (5.2) and 123 steals (2.1)... Senior center Chris Manresa ranks 8th in the WCC in field goal percentage (.500) and 9th in rebounding (6.3)... USD continues to rank 1st in WCC in three-point FG% defense (.310; #59 NCAA).

TOREROS AT THE JCP: USD is 9-5 at home this season and has won 7 of their last 10 games at the JCP... The Toreros are averaging 69.8 ppg while limiting opponents to 64.8 ppg (+5.0 scoring margin)... Johnny Dee averages 16.5 ppg at the JCP, and is followed by Christopher Anderson (9.9 ppg), Ken Rancifer (9.6 ppg) and Chris Manresa (8.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg).

KOK CLOSING IN ON SINGLE SEASON SHOT BLOCK RECORD: Jito Kok, USD's 6'9" freshman center from Wageningen, Netherlands, currently owns 50 blocked shots on the season... He cruised past the previous USD freshman mark of 38 when he totaled 4 blocks against the Gonzaga Bulldogs (Feb. 2, 2013)... He is first in the WCC (1.7)... With a minimum of 3 games left in the season, Kok has his sights on the all-time USD Division I mark... He currently is 3rd all-time with 50 blocks and is chasing #2- Scott Thompson, 52 ('85-86) and #1- Dondi Bell, 55 ('88-89). Thompson owns the USD career mark with 183 (1983-87).

SCOUTING THE USF DONS: The San Francisco Dons (13-15, 6-9 WCC) come to San Diego riding a two-game winning streak... They defeated LMU in Los Angeles on Feb. 21st by the score of 61-59, then dealt the Pepperdine Waves a 64-58 loss in San Francisco this past Saturday... In the win at LMU, Cody Doolin's lay-in with 0.05 seconds left was the game-winner... USF was up by as many as 20 points during the first half, and 15 at the break before surviving the Lions' 2nd half rally... Junior forward Cole Dickerson led the way with 16 points... In Saturday's win over Pepperdine, 6-9 RS-freshman center Mark Tollefsen paced the Dons with 18 points... For the season USF is paced by Dickerson (14.5 ppg), Doolin (12.4 ppg) and junior guard De'End Parker (11.9 ppg)... The Dons are averaging 69.5 points per game and 32.4 rebounds, while surrendering 69.4 ppg and 35.2 rpg on average to its opponents...
