Toreros Dominate in Victory Against BYU
Four San Diego players scored in double-digits, led by Isaiah Pineiro's 20 points, as the Toreros earned a convincing victory against BYU, 75-62, Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

GAME #31: The San Diego Toreros (18-12, 9-9 WCC), the No. 6 seed for the 2018 Gorilla Glue West Coast Conference Basketball Championships, will take on the No. 3 seed BYU Cougars (22-9, 11-7) at 1:00 p.m. in Saturday's first of four quarterfinal contests at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

SERIES RECORD: This is the 19th meeting between USD and BYU with the Cougars owning a 13-5 advantage... USD won the last meeting back on Feb. 16th by the score of 75-62 (Isaiah Pineiro, 20 points) in a game played at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Cougars won the game in Provo on January 20th, 74-58 (Olin Carter III, 14 points). This marks the third time USD will face BYU in the WCC Tourney as a No. 6 seed. In 2013 USD won 72-69 in the quarterfinals, and in 2012 BYU won 73-68 in the quarterfinals.

RADIO/TV/STREAM: All USD games are broadcast on either The Mighty 1090AM or ESPN 1700AM with Jack Cronin (4th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game show airs 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Cronin's call on Saturday will air on The Mighty 1090AM, and the game will be televised by Spectrum SportsNet (Barry Tompkins and Dan Belluomini) and also air on NBCSports California, ROOT Rocky Mountain, AT&T Rocky Mountain, BYUtv and TheW.tv.

WCC SEEDINGS: (#1) Gonzaga (17-1 WCC, 27-4), (#2) Saint Mary's College (16-2, 27-4), (#3) BYU (11-7, 22-9), (#4) San Francisco (9-9, 17-14), (#5) Pacific (9-9, 14-17), (#6) San Diego (9-9, 18-12), (#7) Santa Clara (8-10, 11-19), (#8) LMU (5-13, 10-19), (#9) Portland (4-14, 10-21), (#10) Pepperdine (2-16, 5-25).

ACTING HEAD COACH SAM SCHOLL: USD Executive Director of Athletics Bill McGillis named Sam Scholl acting head coach for the Torero men's basketball program on February 27th for the remainder of this season. Scholl played two seasons at USD (1998-2000) and was the Toreros' lone senior on the team's 20-9 squad from the 1999-2000 campaign. USD would post a 38-18 two-year record during Scholl's playing career. Scholl would go on to spend seven seasons on the USD coaching staff under former head coach Brad Holland, including helping the 2002-03 team win the 2003 WCC Basketball Championship and reach the 2003 NCAA Division I Tournament for the third time in program history. For eight seasons Scholl was on the Santa Clara University staff, and in September of 2013 was promoted to Associate Coach under head coach Kerry Keating. At SCU Scholl helped the Broncos to 26 wins in 2012-13 and 24 victories in 2010-11. The Broncos won the College Basketball Invitational post-season tournament in 2013 and the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2011. A native of Gig Harbor, Wash., Scholl completed his undergraduate degree in Sociology at USD in 2001. Prior to arriving at USD he played two seasons at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Washington, and was the point guard on the 1996 2A Washington State championship team for Gig Harbor High School. Sam and his wife, Heather, have three daughters - Riley, Reese and Regan.

TORERO TRIO EARN ALL-WCC HONORS: The West Coast Conference announced the 2017-18 Men's Basketball All-Conference teams on Tuesday and three Toreros were recognized. Senior forward Isaiah Pineiro was named to the first team, junior guard Isaiah Wright was selected second team, and junior guard Olin Carter III was named honorable mention. Pineiro led the Toreros in scoring this season at 15.4 points per game (#6 in WCC), as well as in rebounding at 6.2 rpg (#10 WCC). Isaiah Wright led the team in assists at 5.3 apg (#3 WCC) and steals at 1.3 (#3 WCC), and ranked second on the team in points (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.0 rpg). Carter, who late in the season became just the 25th Torero to crack 1,000 career points, ranked third on the team in scoring at 12.2 ppg (#17 WCC).

TORERO TIDBITS:
* The Toreros continue to be one of the top defensive teams in the country in 3-point FG% defense (.298, #6), FG% defense (.40, #29) and in scoring defense (65.2, #25)... USD has also protected the rim and is first in the WCC for blocked shots per game (4.1).

* With 13 points against BYU, junior guard Olin Carter III became just the 25th USD men's basketball player to reach 1,000 career points... He now has totaled 1,043 points (90 games/87 starts; 11.6 ppg career average)... His 211 career made threes ranks 3rd all-time and his 600 three-point attempts ranks second... Johnny Dee owns both Torero career marks (333-831).

* Among WCC players, Isaiah Wright is #3 in assists (5.3), #3 in steals (1.3), #10 in scoring (13.3) and #16 in rebounding (5.0); Isaiah Pineiro is #6 in scoring (15.4), #10 in rebounding (6.2), #12 in FG% (.487) and #13 in FT% (.778); Olin Carter III is #2 in 3-pointers made per game (2.5) and #17 in scoring (12.2); Tyler Williams is #10 in 3-point % (.412); Yauhen Massalski is #4 in blocked shots per game (1.2) and Juwan Gray is #13 in blocked shots per game (0.8).

* The Toreros are 8-6 away from the JCP with wins coming against SJSU (81-64), Grand Canyon (72-62), New Mexico State (65-60), Colorado (69-59), Portland (81-74, ot), LMU (89-82), Pepperdine (68-66) and USF (64-61)... USD is paced by Isaiah Pineiro (15.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg), Isaiah Wright (15.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals) and Olin Carter III (12.2 ppg)... USD limits opponents to 41.4 FG% and 27.8% from 3-point land (62-223)... The Toreros have made 118 three-pointers on the road (37.3%).

* The Toreros closed out the regular-season finale with a come-from-behind 64-61 win at USF (Feb. 24)... Juwan Gray scored a career-high 18 points and Olin Carter III chipped in 16 points... The Toreros trailed 31-21 at the halftime break but converted 16-of-26 shots (61.5%) over the final 20 minutes... With the win the Toreros swept the season series against the USF Dons.

SCOUTING THE BYU COUGARS: The BYU Cougars (22-9) head to the WCC Tourney as the No. 3 seed... They closed out the regular-season with a 79-65 home loss to Gonzaga... Yoeli Childs led the way with 19 points... Last Thursday they defeated Portland 72-60 on Feb. 22nd with Childs notching a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds... In the 75-62 loss at USD on Feb. 17, the Cougars were paced by Elijah Brown and TJ Haws, each with 14 points... Season leaders include Bryant (17.6 ppg), Childs (17.3 ppg) and Haws (12.2 ppg)... The Cougars average 74.0 ppg and 33.0 rpg while limiting opponents to 66.5 ppg and 30.8 rpg... Head Coach Dave Rose is in his 13th year (327-120).
