GAME #32: The USD Toreros (14-17), the WCC's No. 6 seed, will play the No. 7 seed Pepperdine Waves (12-17) this coming Thursday, March 7th, in the last game of the evening (approximately 8:30 pm). This marks the third straight time these teams will have faced off at the WCC Basketball Championships. The winner of this contest will advance to Friday's quarterfinal match-up against the No. 3 seed BYU Cougars (21-10 record).

Seniors lead Toreros past Pepperdine 76-69
(San Diego, Calif.) - It was Senior Day at the Jenny Craig Pavilion and USD's trio of seniors (Chris Manresa, Cameron Miles, Ken Rancifer) played a huge role in the team's hard-fought 76-69 victory over the Pepperdine Waves. Manresa and Rancifer each chipped in with 13 points and Miles added 10 points and a season-high 5 assists. Rounding out USD's balanced scoring attack was the sophomore backcourt tandem of Johnny Dee (14 points) and Christopher Anderson (13 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists).
This is the 96th meeting between USD and Pepperdine with the Waves owning a commanding 56-39 series lead... The Toreros own a 5-game winning streak in the series after winning in Malibu this season (60-52, Jan. 12th), and again this past Saturday (Mar. 2nd) in both team's final regular season contest, 76-69... In the most recent win USD had all five of its starters score in double figures - Johnny Dee

(10 points)... In the win in Malibu in early January, Johnny Dee

(16 points)... USD and Pepperdine have met ten times in WCC Tournament play and the Toreros hold a 6-4 advantage, including six wins in the last seven meetings.... In last year's meeting at The Orleans Arena on March 1st, 2012, Johnny Dee
poured in a career-high 30 points against the Waves as the Toreros earned a 76-54 win... Dee made 9-of-14 shots, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
RADIO-TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on The Mighty 1090 or ESPN 1700 AM with Andy Masur (6th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game shows air 15 minutes prior to tip-off. COACH GRIER (6TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the Pepperdine contest with a 14-17 mark and finished 7-9 in league... Last season's squad finished 13-18, winning 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games before falling to BYU by just 5 points in WCC quarterfinals... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by a 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His 2008-09 campaign (16-16) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tourney opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Giselle & Ashley.
TRIO OF TOREROS RECOGNIZED WITH ALL-WCC HONORS: For the second straight year the USD Toreros had a member of its squad named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team... Last year it was Johnny Dee, and this year 6-9 center Jito Kok (Wageningen, Netherlands) was named to the five-man squad... Kok, who leads the WCC with 50 blocked shots, has appeared in 31 games and owns averages of 3.1 points per game and 3.1 rebounds per game... USD did not have any players selected to the 10-man All-West Coast Conference first team, but Dee and Christopher Anderson both earned honorable mention recognition... Dee ranks 9th in the WCC in scoring (14.6 ppg), while Anderson ranks second in steals (2.1) and third in assists (5.6).
DEE NAMED TO WCC ALL-ACADEMIC SQUAD: Sophomore guard Johnny Dee is one of eleven WCC men's basketball players to be named to the 2012-13 WCC Men's Basketball All-Academic Team. To be considered, players must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a significant contributor to the team. Running mate Christopher Anderson, who owns a 3.37 GPA as an undeclared major, was selected honorable mention.

ANDERSON RECOGNIZED BY SAN DIEGO HALL OF CHAMPIONS: Sophomore guard Christopher Anderson was recently named a San Diego Hall of Champions amatuer star of the month for February... He joins teammates Ken Rancifer (December) and Johnny Dee (January) this season... His acrobatic reverse lay-up with 0.02 seconds left in the first overtime gave USD a 69-68 road win over LMU back on Feb. 4th (it was the #10 play of the day on ESPN Sportscenter)... He finished the game with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists... He played 36 minutes in USD's home win over BYU chipping in with 6 points, 4 steals, 5 assists and 4 rebounds... For the month he started all eight games for the Toreros and finished with averages of 8.0 points per game, 6.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals. He dished out 11 assists in a two-point home loss to then #7 Gonzaga along with 9 points and 7 rebounds, and closed out the month with 7 points and 9 assists against the USF Dons.
TORERO TIDBITS: With their win over Pepperdine last Saturday the Toreros finished with a home record of 10-6... They head to the WCC Basketball Championships with an overall mark of 4-11 in games played away from the JCP...This is the 27th year for the WCC Tournament, and USD owns an overall record of 23-23 (6-4 vs. Pepperdine)... Over the past five games the Toreros are being paced by Ken Rancifer (13.4 ppg), Johnny Dee (12.2 ppg) and Chris Manresa (11.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg)... USD's trio of seniors - Chris Manresa, Cameron Miles and Ken Rancifer - are winding down their four-year careers... The Torero seniors head to the WCC Basketball Championships with the following career numbers - Manresa (114 games with 60 starts, 864 points, 616 rebounds), Miles (111 games, 346 points, 139 assists, 82 steals) and Rancifer (119 games with 79 starts, 937 points, 269 rebounds, 117 made three-pointers)... With 168 assists on the season, Christopher Anderson needs two more to move into the second spot all-time for a single season (169 currently shared by three Toreros)... The record is 195 (David Fizdale, 1995-96).
SCOUTING THE PEPPERDINE WAVES: The Pepperdine Waves (12-17; 4-12 WCC) head to the WCC Basketball Championships looking to snap a four-game losing streak.... In last Saturday's loss to the Toreros, Pepperdine was paced by guard Lorne Jackson (22 points, 5 assists), Jeff Raines (13 points) and freshman forward Stacy Davis (12 points)... For the season Pepperdine has three players averaging in double-figures - guard Lorne Jackson (13.7 ppg), guard Jordan Baker (11.5 ppg) and forward Stacy Davis (11.0 ppg, team-best 7.1 rpg)... Davis was named the WCC Newcomer of the Year and was one of five players named to the WCC All-Freshman Team... Jackson and Baker were both honorable mention All-WCC... As a team, Pepperdine is averaging 62.9 ppg and 34.4 rpg while surrendering 67.6 and 33.6 rpg on average to its opponents... Baker led the Waves in WCC scoring with his 12.9 points per game average, edging out Jackson (12.8 ppg)... Head Coach Marty Wilson is in his 2nd year at the helm.
