The USD men's basketball team, under the direction of first year head coach Bill Grier, have been picked to finish in 3rd place in the WCC Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll. Gonzaga edged out Saint Mary's as the favorite to capture their eighth consecutive regular-season WCC crown. The Zags earned 5 first place votes and 61 points, followed by Saint Mary's with 3 first place votes and 59 points. USD (43 points) was followed by Santa Clara (38), San Francisco (34), Pepperdine (22), Portland (16) and Loyola Marymount (15). Coach Grier inherits 4 starters and 9 returners from last year's club that finished 18-14 overall. Leading the charge will be junior Gyno Pomare, a First Team All-WCC pick a year ago after averaging 14.9 points and 8.3 rebounds, and junior point guard Brandon Johnson, a WCC 2nd pick with averages of 12.8 points and 4.8 assists.
Collegehoops.net announced its Preseason Mid-Major All-Americans recently and Gyno Pomare is Honorable Mention. In addition to Pomare and Johnson, the Toreros return a group of players that saw significant playing time a year ago - junior forward Daniel Fleming, junior wing Ray Murdock, junior guard Danny Brown, sophomore Chris Lewis and sophomore De'Jon Jackson. Lewis and Jackson were both named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.
Redshirt freshman forward Josh Miller and sophomore walk-on Patrick Lacey are joined by five freshmen that round out the squad - guard Trumaine Johnson, forward Rob Jones, forward Clinton Houston, center Nathan Lozeau and guard Devin Ginty.
This Friday the Toreros will hold their first official practice in preparation for the 2007-08 season. USD will host two exhibitions against Point Loma Nazarene (Oct. 31st, 7 pm) and Occidental College (Nov. 4th, 2 pm) before their first regular season game at Hawaii on Nov. 9th.
