COACH GRIER (6TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... Last season's squad finished 13-18, but won 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the WCC Basketball Championships before falling to BYU by just 5 points... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by the team's 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah on Christmas... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His second campaign with USD (16-16 mark in 2008-09) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament (hosted by USD) with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Hired on March 26, 2007, Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Prior to USD Grier spent 16 years at Gonzaga, including the last 8 seasons as Mark Few's top assistant. Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Giselle & Ashley.

TOREROS RUN PAST SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN 91-58: The USD Toreros (1-0) kicked off the 2012-13 season with a convincing 91-58 win over the visiting San Diego Christian Hawks (0-1) this past Friday. The Toreros got off to a slow start but eventually turned the tide with their defensive play to pull away to a rout. Junior Dennis Kramer came off the bench to score 16 points in 18 minutes on 6-of-7 shooting, and senior Chris Manresa chipped in with 14 points while converting 6-of-7 shots. "I thought our approach was a little casual at both ends of the floor in the first part of the game," said 6th-year head coach Bill Grier. "But what I was pleased with was that they knew it and responded with about 8 minutes to go in the half by starting to defend like the way we are capable of. Part of it was I thought early on we got away from our defensive plan and that San Diego Christian did a nice job of exposing it. But I thought we broke it open towards the end of the half when we defended better. And coming out in the second half, I told this group that I was really happy with their approach coming out of the locker room and that carried through the rest of the game." First-year junior guard Mike Davis chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, and senior forward Ken Rancifer added 10 points with a game-high 9 rebounds. Sophomore guards Christopher Anderson (8 points, 6 assists) and Johnny Dee (8 points) started in the backcourt, and Simi Fajemisin and Jito Kok each added 3 blocked shots, with Kok second in rebounding with 8 caroms. In the first half the visitors led 27-22 with 7:26 to go, but the Toreros were able to close it out with a 22-4 run and 44-31 intermission lead. Kramer was one of the key sparks as he scored 10 of his 16 points in the final 10 minutes of the first half. In the second half San Diego Christian would not be able to get any closer than the halftime deficit, and the Toreros would go on to lead by as many as 36 with under two minutes to play.

SCOUTING THE NORTHERN KENTUCKY NORSE: Northern Kentucky University makes its NCAA Division I debut on Wednesday against the Toreros... In their final year of NCAA Division II play last season the Norse posted a 23-7 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament... The Norse are now members of the Atlantic Sun Conference and were picked to finish 10th in the preseason poll... Head Coach Dave Bezold (161-79, 9th year at NKU) returns 2 starters and 5 lettermen from last year's squad... Top returners include senior point guard Ethan Faulkner (10.0 ppg), senior guard-forward Eshaunte Jones (10.7 ppg; 69 made treys), junior guard Chad Jackson (9.4 ppg) and senior forward Stretch Watson (6.3 ppg)... NKU finished No. 2 nationally in last season's NCAA Division II team statistics in 3-point shooting (42.5%)... This marks NKU's first trip to the west coast since the 1995-96 season when the Norse played Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Los Angeles.
