TOREROS COME UP SHORT IN 74-71 LOSS TO MATADORS: The University of San Diego men's basketball team (2-1) fell to Cal State Northridge (3-0) 74-71 Thursday evening in their second game of the NUCDF Basketball Challenge. For the second time in as many nights, the Toreros found themselves down late in the game, but unlike the previous night the Toreros comeback attempt fell just short. Four Toreros recorded double-digit points, led by sophomore Johnny Dee's 16 points on 5-11 shooting. Sophomore Christopher Anderson added 15 points to go along with eight assists, while John Sinis and Jito Kok each chipped in ten points apiece. The Toreros found themselves down early due to the hot start of Matador forward Stephan Hicks who scored nine points in the first six minutes giving Northridge a 17-8 lead. Hicks would end up with a game-high 25 points on 9-10 shooting. The Toreros narrowed the gap and went in to halftime down 36-34 despite outshooting the Matadors (56%-41%) in the first half. The Matadors would hold on to the lead for the rest of the game, leading by as much as nine. The Toreros were able to pull within two points with 58 seconds remaining with a chance to tie, but Anderson's running shot rattled out. The Toreros were without senior Chris Manresa, who is out with a sore back for the second straight game. Coach Bill Grier missed his presence inside as the Toreros were outrebounded 40-24. Anderson led the team with six rebounds.
TOREROS INK BAILEY TO NLI: TheUniversity of San Diego men's basketball head coach Bill Grier and his staff is excited to announce that Brett Bailey has signed a national letter of intent and scholarship agreement for the upcoming 2013-14 school year. Bailey is a 6'6", 205 lb. wing from Spokane, Washington. He is currently in his senior year at University High School where he plays for coach Garrick Phillips. "I'm excited to finally make Brett part of our program...officially," said head coach Bill Grier. "It has been a long wait for this day as Brett committed to us in the spring before his Junior year. His versatility as a player will really help us on the perimeter. He can shoot the ball well from three but is also good at making plays off the dribble. He has very good feel for the game, and he is a very rugged and tough athlete that has a willingness to defend. He will be physically ready to step in and impact our program as a Freshman and our staff has very high expectations of him." This past season as a junior Bailey led University High School to the State Tournament for the first time since 1985. He was named Most Valuable Player for the Greater Spokane League; a 1st Team WIAA All-State pick; and to the WIAA AAA State All-Tournament Team. He averaged 16.2 points per game and 6.5 rebounds while also receiving All-State recognition from the Seattle Times and Tacoma News Tribune.
