GAME #7: The USD Toreros (5-1), under the direction of head coach Lamont Smith, look to get back to their winning ways when they head up the coast for a Saturday contest at UC Santa Barbara (5-2). USD saw its 5-game winning streak snapped on Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion by the SDSU Aztecs, 66-57.

SERIES RECORD: This is the 25th meeting between USD and UCSB with the Gauchos owning a 16-8 advantage in the series that began in 1964... San Diego has won the last two meetings... Last season at the JCP on Dec. 11, 2016 the Toreros earned a 77-68 victory with Brett Bailey leading the way with 17 points... USD's last trip to UCSB was on December 11, 2014... The Toreros made 10-14 threes and were paced by guard Johnny Dee with 22 points.

RADIO/STREAM: All USD home and away games will be broadcast on either The Mighty 1090AM or ESPN 1700AM with Jack Cronin (4th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game show airs 15 minutes prior to tip-off. Ben Higgins fills in for Cronin on Saturday with the game being broadcast on ESPN 1700AM. The game will also be streamed on BIGWEST.TV.

WCC STANDINGS (as of Nov. 30): Gonzaga (6-1), San Diego (5-1), Saint Mary's (5-2), BYU (5-2), LMU (4-2), San Francisco (3-2), Pacific (4-4), Portland (3-4), Pepperdine (2-5), Santa Clara (2-5).

WCC PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Toreros were picked to place sixth by the WCC head coaches in the 2017-18 Preseason WCC Coaches Poll. Saint Mary's was selected first with 81 points and 9 first place votes. Rounding out the top-5 was Gonzaga (73 points, 1 first place vote), BYU (62 points), San Francisco (59 points) and Santa Clara (44 points). Following San Diego is Pepperdine (30 points), Pacific (24 points), Portland (21 points) and Loyola Marymount (19 points).

COACH SMITH (3RD YEAR): Coach Lamont Smith (San Diego, 1998) is in his third year at the helm of the Torero basketball program. The team's 5-0 start to the season matched the program's best Divison I start (2013-14 & 1990-91). He welcomes back four starters from last year's squad that finished 13-18 overall. The Toreros earned a home victory over BYU and swept Portland during league play. Brett Bailey, last year's lone senior and team captain, earned All-WCC Second Team honors. Prior to USD Smith was at the University of New Mexico where he was the Associate Head Coach. Prior to UNM he spent time at Washington, Arizona State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's College and Saint Louis University. Smith returned to USD where he was a member of the men's basketball team from 1994-99. He started all 27 games his senior year in 1998-99 for the 18-9 Toreros. He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from 1997-99. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of San Diego in 1998. Lamont and his wife Kimberly have two daughters -- Payton and Olivia.

A LOOK AHEAD: The Toreros continue their road swing with a game at New Mexico State (5-1) on Wednesday, December 6th (6:00 p.m. PST). The Aggies play against Prairie View A&M on Sunday, December 3rd, before the match-up against San Diego.

TORERO TIDBITS:
* The Toreros 5-1 start to the season can be attributed mainly to their team defensive effort... USD currently is tops in the WCC and among NCAA leaders in 3-point field goal percentage defense (20.0%), scoring defense (59.8) and FG% defense (.381).

* USD's 5-0 start and road win over Grand Canyon moved them into the No. 25 spot on the CollegeInsider.com Top-25 Poll (as of Nov. 27th).

* USD's first loss of the season, a 66-57 setback to crosstown rival SDSU, can be attibuted to poor shooting... The Toreros converted just 23-of-61 shots (.377) and 7-of-30 threes (.233)... Junior Isaiah Pineiro paced the Toreros with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals... Junior guard Isaiah Wright chipped in with 10 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds.

* Last Saturday the Toreros earned an impressive 72-62 road win over previously undefeated Grand Canyon, ranked No. 25 in CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll at the time of the game... Junior guard Isaiah Wright came within a rebound of a triple-double with 16 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds... Junior forward Isaiah Pineiro (17 points), freshman forward Yauhen Massalski (17 points, 7 rebounds) and junior guard Olin Carter III (15 points) also reached double digit scoring... The Toreros did not allow GCU to score a basket over the final nine minutes of action.

SCOUTING THE UCSB GAUCHOS: The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, under the direction of first year head coach Joe Pasternack, are off to a solid 5-2 start... This past Tuesday they earned a 79-72 road win at San Francisco for their fourth consecutive victory... Leland King II (21 points, 14 rebounds) and sophomore guard Max Heidegger (18 points) led five Gauchos in double digit scoring... The victory the UCSB's fourth straight... Heidegger leads the team in scoring at 24.1 points per game and is followed by King II (18.1 ppg), Jalen Cany (11.0), Gabe Vincent (10.1) and Marcus Jackson (10.0)... UCSB is averaging 76.0 ppg and 34.4 rpg, while limiting its opponents on average to 73.6 ppg and 35.4 rpg... Besides USF, team wins have come against North Dakota State, Pepperdine, Montana and Prairie View A&M... UCSB competes in the Big West Conference.

Toreros win third straight with 77-68 win over UCSB
The USD Toreros fought back for a 77-68 home victory over the UCSB Gauchos. The win was USD's third straight and improves their season record to 5-5. Senior forward Brett Bailey continued his stellar play with a team-high 17 points, and was followed by Frank Ryder (16 points), Tyler Williams (15 points) and Olin Carter III (13 points).
