WCC PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Toreros were picked to place sixth by the WCC head coaches in the 2017-18 Preseason WCC Coaches Poll. The Toreros earned a home victory over BYU and swept Portland during league play. Brett Bailey, last year's lone senior and team captain, earned All-WCC Second Team honors. Prior to USD Smith was at the University of New Mexico where he was the Associate Head Coach. Prior to UNM he spent time at Washington, Arizona State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's College and Saint Louis University. Smith returned to USD where he was a member of the men's basketball team from 1994-99. He started all 27 games his senior year in 1998-99 for the 18-9 Toreros. He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from 1997-99. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of San Diego in 1998. Lamont and his wife Kimberly have two daughters -- Payton and Olivia.

A LOOK AHEAD: The Toreros return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday, December 9th, to host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in a 7:00 p.m. contest (FSSD telecast).

TOREROS & WCC: The Toreros 5-2 start to the season can be attributed mainly to their team defensive effort... USD currently is tops in the WCC and among NCAA leaders in 3-point field goal percentage defense (23.7%), scoring defense (60.9) and FG% defense (.385)... Among all WCC players, Isaiah Wright is #1 in steals (2.4) and #2 in assists (5.7); Isaiah Pineiro is #9 in scoring (14.6) and #11 in rebounding (6.3); and Yauhen Massalski is #1 in field goald percentage (.750, 24-32).

TORERO TIDBITS:

* Despite a double-double from junior forward Isaiah Pineiro (14 points, 10 rebounds), the Toreros dropped a 67-57 road decision at UC Santa Barbara (6-2) this past Saturday... Olin Carter III chipped in 14 points and Isaiah Wright added 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals... Freshman Yauhen Massalski grabbed a personal-best 9 boards... USD's chances for a road win were hindered by an off-night at the free throw line (9-23).

* USD's first loss of the season, a 66-57 setback to crosstown rival SDSU on Nov. 30, can be attibuted to poor shooting... The Toreros converted just 23-of-61 shots (.377) and 7-of-30 threes (.233)... Junior Isaiah Pineiro paced the Toreros with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals... Junior guard Isaiah Wright chipped in with 10 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds.

SCOUTING THE NMSU AGGIES: The New Mexico State University Aggies (6-1) are currently riding a 5-game winning streak after Saturday's 69-57 home win over Prairie View A&M... Toreros Downed by New Mexico State 56-51
The USD men's basketball team (2-4) fell to New Mexico State (5-2) 56-51 Saturday afternoon inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros played great defense all night and held a lead late in to the second half, but the Aggies hit too many clutch free-throws down the stretch and pulled away to seal the win.
