Saturday DH to be televised on FSSD

GAME #10: The USD Toreros (4-5) return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion this coming Saturday to take on the Tulane Green Wave (7-2) in a 6:05 p.m. contest. As part of a doubleheader with both games being televised on Fox Sports San Diego, the USD women (6-1) will host crosstown rival San Diego State (4-3) in a 3:35 p.m. contest at the JCP.
SERIES RECORD: This will be the second meeting between USD and Tulane. The Green Wave won the first meeting 65-46 in the final game of the Hoops for Hope Classic on November 27, 2011 at the New Orleans Arena. Darian Norris paced USD with 13 points.
RADIO-TV: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on XX 1090 AM or ESPN 1700 AM with Andy Masur (6th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game show will air 15 minutes prior to tip-off. A audio feed is also available for free of charge at www.usdtoreros.com. Saturday's game airs on XX 1090 AM. Also, both games (USD women vs. SDSU; USD men vs. Tulane) will be televised on Fox Sports San Diego with Mike Pomeranz (play-by-play), Jud Buecher (analyst) and Cheryl Gorman (sideline).
A LOOK AHEAD: The Toreros return back to the Jenny Craig on Tuesday, December 11th, to face Arizona Christian (3-1) at 7:05 pm. Arizona Christian, an NAIA program and member of the CCAAA, plays UC Santa Cruz on Saturday at the Redlands Tournament.
WCC STANDINGS (thru Dec. 5th): Gonzaga (9-0), San Francisco (5-1), Saint Mary's (6-2), Santa Clara (5-2), BYU (5-3), Pepperdine (5-3), Loyola Marymount (5-4), San Diego (4-5) Portland (3-5).
COACH GRIER (6TH YEAR): Coach Bill Grier (Oregon, 1990) is in his sixth season at the helm of the USD program... He enters the Tulane contest with a 4-5 mark and 72-98 career record... Last season's squad finished 13-18, but won 4 of its final 6 regular-season WCC games and then advanced to the quarterfinals of the WCC Basketball Championships before falling to BYU by just 5 points... The 2010-11 season was highlighted by the team's 74-66 home win over #23 Saint Mary's, along with a 67-64 win over Utah on Christmas... The 2009-10 season was highlighted by wins over Stanford, #25 Oklahoma, Houston and Boise State... His second campaign with USD (16-16 mark in 2008-09) was highlighted by road wins over Oregon and Mississippi State... In his rookie year (2007-08) he guided the Toreros to an overall mark of 22-14 and 3rd place finish in the WCC race at 11-3... He guided the Toreros to three wins and the championship title at the WCC Tournament (hosted by USD) with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga... The Toreros then upset No. 15 UCONN in the NCAA Tournament opener with a 70-69 overtime victory, before falling to Western Kentucky in the second round... His 11 WCC wins were the second most for league wins in a single season in program history... Hired on March 26, 2007, Grier is USD's 11th head coach overall and just the 4th head coach since the Torero program moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80... His 22 wins in 2007-08 were also the most by a Torero coach in his first season at USD. In addition to knocking off Kentucky on the road, 81-72, the Toreros earned three wins over Top-25 teams: #21 Saint Mary's, #20 Gonzaga and #15 Connecticut... Prior to USD Grier spent 16 years at Gonzaga, including the last 8 seasons as Mark Few's top assistant. Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Giselle & Ashley.
TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion Saturday for the first time since November 18th... USD is 3-2 in home games this season and snapped a two-game skid on Nov. 18th with a 77-60 win over Siena (Johnny Dee, 27 points)... Dee leads USD in scoring in home games with his 16.4 ppg average... Christopher Anderson averages 11.0 ppg, 5.4 assists and 2.6 steals... As a team USD is averaging 71.0 ppg while limiting its opponents to an average of 63.2 ppg... Senior center Chris Manresa saw his first action since the team's season opener on Nov. 9th when he played 15 minutes at Southern Utah (1 point, 3 rebounds)...Torero trio to start all 9 games this season include Dee (14.6 ppg), Anderson (10.3 ppg) and Ken Rancifer (6.7 ppg; team-best 5.1 rpg).
TOREROS DOWN SOUTHERN UTAH 67-53: The Toreros earned their first road win in four tries with a hard-fought 67-53 win at Southern Utah on Tuesday... Johnny Dee hit two threes and two free throws to jump USD out to an 8-2 lead, then beat the halftime buzzer with another trey for a 36-22 intermission lead... The host Thunderbirds battled back to within 3 points in the 2nd half with 12 minutes to go, but the Toreros regained control and left with a 14-point victory... John Sinnis (7 points, 6 rebounds) and Jito Kok (8 points) gave the Toreros some key minutes during the 2nd half... Dee finished with 17 points, with Christopher Anderson chipping in with 13 points, 6 assists and 5 steals.
TOREROS TO PLAY TWO GAMES IN VEGAS HOLIDAY HOOPS CLASSIC: As a prelude to the 2013 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Championships, the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas will host the 2012 Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic December 22 & 23 with Oregon State, San Diego, James Madison, San Jose State, Boise State and New Orleans as participants. USD and Oregon State will kickoff the event on Saturday, Dec. 22nd with a 6:00 p.m. contest that will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. James Madison and San Jose State will face off in the second game at approximately 8:30 pm. On Sunday, December 23rd, Boise State will take on New Orleans at 1:00 p.m., followed by USD vs. James Madison at approximately 3:30 pm. SCOUTING THE TULANE GREEN WAVE: Tulane comes to San Diego sporting a 7-2 record (7-0 at home; 0-2 on the road)... The Green Wave also comes to town riding a 4-game winning streak... In their last outing they dealt Nicholls State a 65-48 loss on December 4th... Starting guards Ricky Tarrant and Jordan Callahan each scored 16 points to lead the way... Three of their starters average double-digit scoring led by 6-8 junior forward Josh Davis (17.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg)... Davis is joined by Tarrant (14.3 ppg) and Callahan (12.3 ppg)... The Green Wave is averaging 65.7 points per game despite shooting under 40% from the field as a team (39.7%)... They've made 164-of-222 free throw attempts (73.9%) while their opponents have converted just 73-114 (64.0%)... Tulane's two road losses have been to Georgia Tech (79-61) to open the season back on Nov. 9th, adn at Nebraska (61-57) on Nov. 21st...
