Upperclassmen Lead Toreros to 80-65 win at Northern Arizona
The USD men’s basketball team (3-5) won at Northern Arizona 80-65 Saturday afternoon. The Toreros were led by their two upperclassmen; Brett Bailey tied his career-high and led all scorers with 26 points and Cameron Neubauer added 20 points, a new career-high. The Toreros played excellent defense, holding the Lumberjacks to 27 percent (17-for-62) shooting while outrebounding them 47-39.

SERIES RECORD: This will be the 18th meeting between the two schools with the Toreros owning a 10-7 advantage... San Diego has won the last two meetings including last season's 80-65 victory in Flagstaff on December 3, 2016.

WCC PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Toreros were picked to place sixth by the WCC head coaches in the 2017-18 Preseason WCC Coaches Poll. Following San Diego is Pepperdine (30 points), Pacific (24 points), Portland (21 points) and Loyola Marymount (19 points).

COACH SMITH (3RD YEAR): Coach Lamont Smith (San Diego, 1998) is in his third year at the helm of the Torero basketball program. The team's 5-0 start out of the gates matched the program's best Divison I start (2013-14 & 1990-91). He takes a 6-2 record into Saturday's game vs. NAU. Prior to USD, Smith was at the University of New Mexico where he was the Associate Head Coach. Prior to UNM he spent time at Washington, Arizona State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's College and Saint Louis University. Smith returned to USD where he was a member of the men's basketball team from 1994-99. He started all 27 games his senior year in 1998-99 for the 18-9 Toreros. He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from 1997-99. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of San Diego in 1998. Lamont and his wife Kimberly have two daughters -- Payton and Olivia.

A LOOK AHEAD: The Toreros head to Boulder, Colorado on Tuesday to take on the University of Colorado (7-1; Buffs play at #13 Xavier on Dec. 9)... Former USD head coach Brill Grier is an assistant coach with Colorado.

TOREROS & WCC: The Toreros 6-2 start to the season can be attributed mainly to their team defensive effort... USD currently is tops in the WCC and among NCAA leaders in 3-point field goal percentage defense (22.6%), scoring defense (60.8) and FG% defense (.384)... Among all WCC players, Isaiah Wright is #2 in steals (2.1) and #3 in assists (5.4); Isaiah Pineiro is #7 in scoring (15.6) and #10 in rebounding (6.3); and Yauhen Massalski is #1 in field goal percentage (.750, 24-32).
