David Janiak, a US Rowing Level II certified coach, enters his sixth season as assistant varsity coach as well as the coordinator of recruiting activities for men's rowing under Head Coach Brooks Dagman.
For the second time in four seasons, Janiak helped lead the Toreros to a program best National Ranking of 18th in the Varsity 8, matching the results from the 2009 squad which also placed 18th in the Varsity 8 and 14th in the Varsity 4 at the IRA Regatta on Lake Natoma, Calif. Janiak's other successful performances throughout the years in which the Toreros placed second at the Dad Vail Regatta in the eight, won a WIRA Championship and other medals in the four, multiple Grand Final finishes at the San Diego Crew Classic, as well as winning the City Championships in both the eight and four, to go along with many other high placing finishes.
Janiak rowed at Cal Berkeley from 1998 - 2000. During that time Cal was winner of the San Diego Crew Classic, 4-time Pac-10 Champions and 4-time undefeated IRA Champions. A recruited novice, Janiak learned to row under the instruction and guidance of Steve Gladstone and Craig Amerkhanian. After college, while living in Prague, Janiak competitively rowed for a club, which included Czech national team members, currently Janiak rows competitively with the SDRC.
Janiak lives in San Diego with his wife Heather, a former professional volleyball player in Europe as well as a four-year varsity player at Cal. David holds a degree in Philosophy from Cal.
