David Janiak, a US Rowing Level II certified coach, enters his eighth season as Assistant Varsity Coach as well as the Coordinator of Recruiting Activities for Men's Rowing under Head Coach Brooks Dagman.

Since Coach Janiak set foot on Alcala Park, the Toreros have experienced unprecedented success. His prowess at maximizing the athletic potential out of each oarsman and his savvy recruiting style has led USD Men’s Crew to its strongest and deepest squad in program memory.

So far in the 2014-15 season, the Toreros are undefeated, with multiple victories at the San Diego Fall Classic, the San Diego City Championships, and the USD/Gonzaga/UCSD Tri-Meet. For the 3rd time in 5 years, Coach Janiak helped lead the Toreros to qualify for the IRA National Championship Regatta (’09, ’12, ’14). In 2014, USD brought both Varsity and JV boats and finished 23rd in the nation open water ahead of WCC rival, Gonzaga in the Varsity while the JV stepped up to 22nd ahead of FIT and Holy Cross. The 2013-14 was one the most successful season in USD Men’s Crew program history with a sweep in the 1V, JV, and 1F boats at the San Diego City Champs; wins by the Varsity and JV at the Newport Regatta; a 3rd place finish at the San Diego Crew Classic while the JV boat was in the Grand Final finishing ahead of Stanford and Gonzaga as well as the Frosh with a Grand Final appearance; duel victories at the Stanford Invite over UCSD in the Varsity and JV; and at the Western Sprints the Varsity qualified the squad for the IRA National Championship Regatta with their finish over UCSD, the JV won the Western Sprints Championship over Gonzaga and UCSD, while the Frosh finished open water ahead of the boat from Gonzaga.

Coach Janiak has helped numerous crews to success over the years at USD, with a top 18 finish at the 2009 IRA in the Varsity 8 and 14th in the Varsity 4; a silver medal at Dad Vails (2008), a top 9 finish in the 4 at the 2012 Head of the Charles (2012), and placing ahead of George Washington, Penn and a Harvard boat at the Charles (2013); victories and countless medals at WIRA, Western Sprints, Newport Regatta also including Grand Final finishes at the San Diego Crew Classic, and in duel style racing.

Coach Janiak rowed at Cal Berkeley from 1998 - 2001. During Janiak’s tenure at Cal, the Golden Bears were 4 time undefeated winners of the San Diego Crew Classic, Pac-10 Champions and 4-time IRA Champions. Janiak was recruited from out of sport to row at Cal and was put under the instruction and guidance of Steve Gladstone and Craig Amerkhanian. After college, while living in Prague, Czech Republic, Janiak competitively rowed for a club (CVK), which included various Czech Junior, U23 and Senior National Team athletes.

Coach Janiak lives in San Diego with his wife Heather, a former professional volleyball player in Europe as well as a four-year varsity player at Cal, and their 1 year old daughter Elanor. David holds a degree in Philosophy from Cal.
