NEWPORT, Calif. - The USD men's rowing team took first place in the 1V8 and 2V8 at the Newport Regatta on Sunday, beating out UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UCLA, San Diego State, and Orange Coast College. The Toreros' 1V8 finished in 6:04.7 edging out the closest competitor (UCSB) by nearly three seconds. The USD 2V8 clocked in at 6:13.0, 2.1 seconds ahead of second place UCSB.
"As coach, I could not ask for more than what our varsity program delivered today. Both crews executed at the highest possible level for this point in the season," Coach Brooks Dagman said after the races. "Newport is the first severe spring test for the men's programs in Southern California. With the San Diego Crew Classic only two weeks away, every team is keyed up and pushing for their best possible racing performances."
The Toreros Freshman V8 also raced very fast on Sunday, finishing in second with a time of 6:17.1, just 1.1 seconds behind first place Orange Coast College.
"They were walking back on the leading team in the second portion of the course, but simply ran out of course at the end. Losing by a small margin (1.1 seconds) to a great OCC freshman team is going to motivate the group," Coach Dagman said. "They will see OCC again at the Crew Classic. I suspect that some more work on starts and sprinting will help the team get on better terms with a worthy rival."
The Toreros return to action on April 5th and 6th when they compete in the Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
"After winning the San Diego City Championships, this win at Newport adds a legitimate claim to be the fastest team in Southern California at this point," Coach Dagman said. "We are ready for the Crew Classic!"
