Varsity 8 will race again on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's rowing team had a strong showing in the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic. The varsity eight finished third place in their heat of the American Specialty Health Cal Cup, while the novice 8 finished second in the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup.
The varsity eight boat of Mary Tausend, Stephen Wainwright, Ryan Boufford, Henry Perazelli, William Stoney, Michael Fox, Conor Brennan, Daniel Ferons, Taylor Shramo was the first Torero boat to race, and they had a strong showing, as they chased down the defending WIRA champion boat from Washington State in the final third to claim the third place victory with a time of 6.08.41. The Toreros were just off the pace of the second lace boat of Oklahoma City, who finished with a time of 6.05.64.
The novice eight boat of Lauren Takahashi, Mike Nichols, Brett Lynch, Gary Bastian, Andrew Griffin, Scott Haesler, Nick Marinello, Gabriel Jacobs and Evan Centala maintained an open water hold on second place throughout their heat and finished with a time of 6:24.7, which was five seconds faster that the third place boat from Washington State.
The V8 boat will return to action on Sunday at 8:30 in the finals of the American Specialty Health Cal Cup, while the novice 8 will also return to action on Sunday, as they qualified for the finals in the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup at 10:50 a.m.
