Men's Rowing Has Strong Showing at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's rowing team has a good showing on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic out at Mission Bay.

The men's varsity 8 boat of Torrey Ray, John Bacic, Will Bastien, Taylor Terheggen, Gary Bastien, Stephen Wainwright, Dano Ferons, Mat Albrand recorded a time of 6:08.80, good for a third place finish in the American Specialty Health Cal Cup. The Toreros were just two seconds behind the second place boat from Purdue, and three seconds short of the first place finisher, Orange Coast College. With the finish, USD will now advance on to race on Sunday in the Petite Final at 9 a.m.

The novice 8 boat, which consisted of Pilar Malim, Alex La Bruno, Quinn Montgomery, Ryan Sandy, Henri Hicks, Braeden Drouillard, Daniel Hearst, Charlie Penn, Joe Wier, also had an exceptionally fast time in the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup. USD finished third in their heat with a time of 6:24.7, just four seconds behind the second place boat from Oregon State University, and six seconds off the pace of first place Orange Coast College. The novice boat also qualified for the petite Derek Guelker Memorial Cup, and the Toreros took the heat in first place with a time of 6:26.57.

 

 

The second varsity 8 boat of Lauren Takahashi, Fredrick Lindekugel, Nick Marinello, Brandon de Caussin, Gordie Nash, Carlo Rivera, Anthony Mejia, Chris Reyes, Taylor Shramo finished the Joan Ward Memorial Cup heat with a time of 6:51.71, good for a fifth place finish. The boat who won this heat was from the California Rowing Club, and they had a time of 6:05.09.

The Toreros will return to the water on Sunday to close out racing in the San Diego Crew Classic out at Mission Bay.
