SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros are preparing for their first official race of the fall season where they will battle local crews on their home water Saturday morning. They are also getting ready to welcome alumni, friends and family to their Homecoming parade and dinner taking place on Friday.
Row For the Cure
The men's rowing team is set to compete in Row for the Cure, a four-kilometer race around Vacation Island, on Saturday, October 14. UC San Diego hosts the 16th-annual regatta where USD pays for each boat entered in an effort to raise money to fight breast cancer. The men's varsity eight race begins at 7:40 a.m.
UCSD partnered with the Susan G. Komen San Diego Foundation, the only organization in San Diego that provides free services for those impacted by breast cancer. 100% of the race profits will go to benefit the Komen Foundation. 75% of every dollar raised stays in San Diego to fund local breast health programs and the remaining 25% goes to fund breast cancer research.
Before race day, the USD men's and women's crews are hosting their annual Homecoming event. Spectators can watch the Toreros row then enjoy tacos and a few guest speakers, including Head Coach Brooks Dagman, Women's Head Coach Sarah Trowbridge and Executive Director of Athletics Bill McGillis.
5:30 - Floating Parade
6:30 - Event begins
This year the Toreros are also celebrating USD rowing's 40th Anniversery. The Homecoming event marks the start of a year where both teams will remember and honor their long histories. All alumni, friends and family are encouraged to attend a reunion the weekend of the San Diego Crew Classic on March 24.
Looking ahead, USD will take off the Boston to race in the notorious Head of the Charles on October 28.
