SAN DIEGO, Calif. - This weekend a select number of Toreros will travel to Boston to compete at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta. Both current student-athletes and alumni will participate in the almost 5,000 kilometer race.
Last week, USD rowing celebrated Homecoming and Parents Weekend at the boathouse with student-athletes, alumni, family and friends.
USD alum and former rower Michael Gerhart was honored by the men's team at the Friday Homecoming event. They named a boat after him for his dedication to alumni relations and continued support of the program.
On Saturday October 16, the men competed in Row for the Cure on Mission Bay. The Varsity eight set the bar for the rest of the day by finishing first, 24 seconds ahead of cross-town rival UCSD. Both the Freshman and Novice eights followed suit and earned first place medals. The Varsity four finished third.
This weekend the Toreros travel to Boston for the 53rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta. It is one of the most prestigious long-distance races in the world with 400,000 people expected to attend. The Toreros are bringing coxswain Will Graf, oarsmen Connor Olson, Sam Stephens, Travis Heft, and Lucas Walbeck. They will compete in the Collegiate Four event on Sunday October 22 with bow number two at 2:53 p.m. ET.
There will also be a number of alumni racing this weekend in Boston.
John Ciani '85, Jaime Bea '87, Michael Weber '88, and John Scherzinger '90 will be racing USD Alumni 85.5 in event six. The Men's Masters 50+ eight races Saturday at 9:50 a.m. with bow number eight. They will be joined by longtime friends of the program coxswain Len Velaz, oarsmen Milos Kapicka, Steve Krum, David Frick, and John Seaver.
Warner Bonner '97 will be racing with the California Rowing Club (CRC) in event 26 on Saturday at 3:25 p.m. with bow number 17.
Nick Bea '17 and Jaime Bea '87 will be racing in the Directors Challenge Parent/Child double, in between events 38 and 39, Sunday 10:40 a.m. with bow number 13.
