SAN DIEGO - The Toreros close out their fall season Sunday at the San Diego Fall Classic on Mission Bay.
After a strong showing at Head of the American where they cruised 18 seconds ahead of their conference competitors, the men look to record fast times on their home course.
The men competed in the Head of the American on Oct. 28 in Sacramento. While California’s three crews took the top spots, the Toreros were the next to finish. The varsity eight crossed the line 18 seconds ahead of fifth place finisher Gonzaga.
Similar to the varsity eight, the only school able to beat USD's second eight was California.
The Toreros are back on their home course Sunday to race in the San Diego Fall Classic. The men are scheduled to race Arizona State, Orange Coast College, San Diego State, UC San Diego, UC Irvine and UCLA.
Both the first and second eights will begin the 6k course at 7:30 a.m. PT. The varsity eight is stroked by Connor Olson followed by Owen Chase, Travis Heft, Sam Stephens, Brennan McManus, Eric Hoster, Sam Jones, Lucas Walbeck and Will Graf as coxswain.
The second varsity is lead by AJ Armenta, stroked by Cade Kirschman followed by Ben Thibeau in seven, Simon Finnie in six, Jerome Yankey in five, Casey Donovan in four, Terence Gourmelen in three, Evan Nassar in two and Michael Darby in bow.
An alumni boat will also be racing at 7:30 a.m. Len Velez will cox, Mike Weber ('88) will stroke, followed by Nick Karwoski, Shane Farmer ('09), Brett O'Keefe ('86), Mike Gerhart ('88), Steve Krum, John Ciani ('85), and Will Bastien ('15).
At 8:45 a.m. the freshman and novice eights will begin their race. Charlotte Harrison will cox the freshman eight. Stroke will be Eric Hoster, followed by Travis Heft, Jerome Yankey, Brennan McManus, Casey Donovan, Terence Gourmelen, Cade Kirschman and Ben Thibeau.
AJ Armenta will lead the novice, followed by Sam Foglio, Harrison Badawi, Hunter Pflueger, Nick Tavares-Finson, Max Steinhauer, Joseph Abeyta, Devin Thrush and Reid Salamack.
At 9 a.m. another alumni boat will take off. A quad stroked by Milos Kapicka then Jaime Bea ('87) Nick Watson ('17), and Nick Bea ('17).
The final races of the day divide the varsity eight into two. At 10 a.m. two fours will race each other in the Open Four Event. In one boat Will Graf, Connor Olson, Sam Stephens, Sam Jones and Lucas Walbeck will race Charlotte Harrison, Owen Chase, Simon Finnie, Evan Nassar and Michael Darby.
Staging will be from the racing venue instead of the boathouse this year. The boats will be stored about 50 meters north of the finish line and the hospitality tent will be set up at Crown Point Shores, about 100 meters south of the finish line.
