PRINCETON, NJ -- The Toreros dropped a hard-fought 27-17 road decision to the Princeton Tigers (1-0) today at Powers Field. San Diego (1-2) battled back from a 14-0 deficit to get within 20-17 late in the fourth period. Princeton then iced the game on their final possession, completing three key third down situations to extend the drive that culminated with Stephen Carlson's third touchdown reception for the 27-17 final.

In the first quarter the Toreros opened with a solid opening drive going 42 yards over 12 plays, but were not able to convert on Patrick Murray's 37-yard field goal attempt. The Torero defense stopped the Tigers on their next possession, but Princeton punted away and recovered a fumble by Christian Brooks at the San Diego 37-yard line. The Tigers would find the endzone five plays later with Chad Kanoff connecting with Stephen Carlson for a 9-yard score. Princeton missed on the PAT attempt for the 6-0 lead at the 6:58 mark. Once again USD would string an impressive drive, going 78 yards over 7 plays, but Jordan Charles would fumble on the Princeton 5 yard line, giving the Tigers the ball back with 3:20 left.

On the first play of the second quarter the Tigers would close out their 96-yard drive with their second touchdown with Kanoff hitting Carlson for 14 yards at 14:53. Princeton converted on their two-point pass conversion for a 14-0 lead. A sack by Jonathan Petersen on 4th down at the San Diego 44-yard line gave the Toreros the ball back at the 11:31 mark. This time USD converted, marching 56 yards over 9 plays with Anthony Lawrence connecting with Michael Keating for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 7:13 left to pull the Toreros within 14-7. The third period saw Princeton convert two field goals (32, 33) from Tavish Rice to extend their lead to 20-10 with 5:15 left in the third period. That score would hold through the period. Early in the fourth period Princeton went for it on fourth down from the San Diego 5-yard line and the Torero defense held. Back-to-back first down pass completions from Lawrence to Priest (16 & 17 yards) moved the Toreros out to their own 41-yard line with 10:01 to go. Lawrence would connect with Christian Brooks for 24 yards down to the Princeton 23-yard line, and on the next play Brooks connected with receiver Justin Priest on an option pass play to pull USD within 20-17 with 7:10 to go.

On Princeton's next possession the Tigers converted three key third down plays. The third one, from the San Diego 42-yard line and facing a third and sixteen, Kanoff connected with Carlson for the third straight first down completion, this time for 34 yards down to the 8-yard line for first and goal. Kanoff and Carlson capped off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown play to push the lead to 27-17 with 1:36 to go. It was Carlson's third touchdown reception of the day from Kanoff. USD's final possession would end with Lawrence's pass into the endzone intended for Alex Spadone getting picked off.
