Offense Explodes in Victory Against Butler
Sept. 23, 2017

Box Score

SAN DIEGO -- Anthony Lawrence threw for 367 yards and five touchdowns to lead San Diego to a 38-17 victory against Butler on Saturday afternoon in the Brian Fogarty PFL Classic at Torero Stadium.

The win was the Toreros (2-2, 1-0 PFL) 28th consecutive Pioneer Football League victory at home.

USD's offense was clicking on all cylinders, racking up 499 yards of total offense, averaging 7.0 yards per play and producing a season-high 38 points. The Toreros went 6-for-8 on trips to the red zone.

Lawrence's five touchdown passes tied his career high, set Oct. 22, 2016, against Valparaiso. He finished the game 26-39 with 367 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.

Lawrence's primary targets were wide receiver Justin Priest and tight end Ross Dwelley, who combined for 249 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Priest registered a career-high three touchdown catches on 148 yards receiving -- just six yards shy of his career best, which he set last weekend at Princeton.

San Diego won its 28th consecutive PFL home game.

Running back Emilio Martinez continued his stellar freshman campaign, rushing for a team-high 93 yards on 13 carries. A major chunk of those yards came on an electrifying 52-yard run in the fourth quarter that set up the Toreros final field goal of the game and gave USD a 38-17 advantage.

Martinez also contributed 58 kickoff return yards to bring his all-purpose total up to 151 yards.

The Toreros defense played well and limited the Bulldogs (2-2, 0-1 PFL) to just three points in the second half. Max Michaels led a suffocating Toreros defensive effort with seven tackles. Kama Kamaka and Ray Clark spent a lot of time in the Bulldogs backfield, producing 1.5 tackles for loss apiece.

USD's defense was particularly impressive on third downs, holding Butler to four conversions on 13 attempts.

The Toreros will look to continue its momentum next Saturday when continues PFL play at Dayton at 9 a.m. (PT).
