DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of San Diego football team suffered a 38-10 loss at Drake on Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Football League action. The Toreros (2-3, 1-1 PFL) were unable to recover after falling into a 14-0 hole in the first quarter. Turnovers proved to be the difference for USD as Drake only held a slight edge in offensive yardage, 378-366. The Toreros threw four interceptions and fumbled twice.
Kenn James barely missed out on his second consecutive 100+ yard rushing game for the Toreros after running for 98 yards on 23 carries, while Logan Smith hauled in eight catches for 99 yards on the day. Mason Mills completed 24-of-37 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted four times.
Drake (4-2, 3-0 PFL) got on the board with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter when Kevin Marshall caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Mike Piatkowski, one of three TD passes for Piatkowski on the day.
The Bulldogs picked off a Mills pass at the USD 33 yard line less than two minutes later and converted the turnover into a 23-yard touchdown pass from Piatkowski to Nick Rosa that put Drake up 14-0.
USD answered at the 8:11 mark in the second quarter when Mills and Brandon White connected for a two-yard TD pass, cutting the Drake lead to 14-7. White had five catches for 38 yards in the contest.
The Toreros would stay within seven until the waning seconds of the first half when Rosa caught a 40-yard TD pass from Piatkowski that put Drake up 21-7 heading into the intermission.
That would prove to be as close as USD would get as Drake came out in the second half and converted back-to-back Torero turnovers to take a 31-7 lead with 6:37 remaining in the third quarter. Piatkowski scored with an eight-yard run, followed by a 20-yard field goal by Cam Bohnert.
In the fourth quarter, Ernie Collins nailed a 28-yard field goal at the 11:20 mark that brought the score to 31-10, but that would be the end of the scoring for the Toreros.
TJ James capped off the day for Drake with an 18-yard TD run with 8:01 left in the game that put the score at the eventual final of 38-10.
Piatkowski finished the day 21-of-31 passing for 250 yards. James gained 83 yards on the ground in 11 carries for the Bulldogs, while Rosa had six catches for 112 yards.
