HIGHLIGHTS

SAN DIEGO -- The USD Toreros turned in a dominating performance in today's homecoming game with a 56-27 win over Morehead State. The victory was USD's 16th straight PFL win, a new league record, and was the team's 29th straight home PFL win. Freshman running back Emilio Martinez rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns, and senior defensive end Jonathan Petersen collected three more sacks and added two forced fumbles.

In jumping out to a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, Martinez had already netted 132 yards rushing on six carries for two touchdowns (20 & 4 yards). Junior quarterback Anthony Lawrence was just as effective as he was a perfect 6-for-6 for 86 yards and touchdown strikes to tight end Ross Dwelley (3 yards) and Zack Holland (31 yards).

Homecoming was filled with family, friends and touchdowns.

The Toreros (4-2, 3-0 PFL) would make it 49-7 by the halftime break with Martinez punching in for his third score from one yard out, and Joseph Binda adding a 7-yard touchdown run about three minutes later. Lawrence would than connect with receiver Justin Priest from two yards out with 17 seconds left. In the third period Reid Sinnett would connect with Michael Keating for an 18-yard touchdown to close out USD's scoring for the day.

Morehead State (2-5, 1-3 PFL) would add three passing touchdowns in the second half with starter Lawson Page tossing two of them to Landon Hurst (27 yards) and Christian Robinson (14 yards). Backup Jack Sherry would connect with Sugar Ray Wyche for their final score from 17 yards out. Page finished the day 26-for-42 for 330 yards and two scores. His main targets were Jarin Higginbotham (10-126) and Robinson (8-107, 1 TD).

USD produced 510 total yards of offense and a season-high 56 points.

USD senior captain Jonathan Petersen will head to Jacksonville needing just one sack to set a new USD all-time record. Currently with 34.5 career sacks, he is tied for second with Mario Kurn (208-2011) and just behind leader Eric Bakhtiari's 35 (2004-2007). With two more forced fumbles, he now has five on the season and improved his USD all-time mark to 15.

For the game the Toreros totaled 510 yards (326 rushing, 184 passing). Joining Martinez with a 100 yard rushing day was Joseph Binda who finished with 101 yards on 9 carries to go with his one touchdown run. Lawrence finished 12-of-15 for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Justin Priest (3-35, 1 TD) and Ross Dwelley (3-16, 1 TD) led the receivers.

A trio of Torero defenders led the way with five tackles -- Colton Georgi, Cassius Johnson and Marcus Vaivao. Johnson added two pass breakups to his stat line.

The Toreros head to Florida next weekend to face the Jacksonville Dolphins on October 21st (9:00 a.m. Pacific). Jack Cronin's call can be heard on ESPN 1700AM.
