SAN DIEGO – The USD Toreros stayed perfect in PFL play with today’s 45-15 victory over the Drake Bulldogs. Senior defensive end Jonathan Petersen totaled three sacks to become the program’s all-time leader, and quarterback Anthony Lawrence threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns. The Toreros improve to 6-0 in the PFL standings and 7-2 overall. It marked USD’s 19th straight PFL win and 30th straight home PFL victory.

The first quarter ended in a 7-7 tie. San Diego took the opening drive of the game 72 yards over nine plays with Anthony Lawrence connecting with TE Ross Dwelley for a 7-yard touchdown at the 10:37 mark. On the drive Michael Bandy hauled in a 29-yard reception and Emilio Martinez added a nice 21 yard run. The Bulldogs would knot the score when quarterback Grant Kraemer hit Tyler Updegraff for a 5-yard touchdown with 5:14 to go.

Following a missed 32-yard field goal to open the second quarter, the Torero defense took the field. On Drake’s second play from scrimmage, senior DE Jonathan Petersen sacked Bulldogs’ QB Grant Kraemer for an 8-yard loss. With the sack Petersen became the program’s all-time leader with 35.5 career sacks. He would add two more sacks later to improve his career mark to 37.5 sacks. The previous mark was held by Eric Bakhtiari (35, 2004-2007). The Bulldogs would eventually work their way down to the San Diego 15 yard line, but Danny Donley’s 32-yard field goal attempt would be blocked by Daniel Cooney. The Torero defense would force a three-and-out and take over on the Drake 38 after David Tolbert’s 7-yard punt return. On second down Lawrence connected with Dwelley for a 28-yard pass play and two plays later found Michael Bandy for an 11-yard touchdown at the 3:01 mark. Patrick Murray would add a 24-yard field goal as time expired in the first half and the Toreros heading to the locker room with a 17-7 advantage.

Early in the second half Kishan Patel intercepted Kraemer at the San Diego 15 yard line and returned it 21 yards. USD followed with a 12-play, 64 yard drive that was culminated with a 3-yard reception by Zack Holland for a touchdown and 24-7 lead with 6:32 left. On the drive Emilio Martinez totaled four carries for 35 yards. The 17 point lead would hold heading into the fourth quarter.

On the first play of the fourth period Lawrence would connect with receiver Justin Priest for a 1-yard score to make it 31-7. Drake would make it 31-15 following an 18-yard touchdown completion from Kraemer to Steven Doran at the 13:34 mark. The Toreros would ice the game with two rushing touchdowns from Joseph Binda (1 yard) and Martinez (13 yards).
