DAVIDSON, NC - The Toreros won the 2017 PFL Championship outright with today'S 63-7 win over Davidson College. USD (8-2, 7-0 PFL) will close out the regular-season next Saturday with Senior Day against the Marist Red Foxes at 2:00 pm. San Diego also earns the league's automatic qualification (AQ), and is the first team to do so for the 2017 NCAA FCS Playoffs. This also is USD's 20th straight PFL victory.

"Our goal every year is to win the PFL Championship and earn a trip to the playoffs," said fifth year head coach Dale Lindsey. "Going into the season we knew we had a lot of new pieces to make that happen again. We had great leadership from our seniors throughout the season and had a core group of freshman that played a key role in our success. I couldn't be happier for our players, coaching staff and school that we are heading back to the playoffs."

The Toreros took control of the game in the first half when they jumped out to 35-0 intermission lead. Anthony Lawrence was nearly perfect in the first 30 minutes as he completed 18-of-22 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Priest (6 for 85 yards; 13-yard TD), Michael Bandy (4 for 87 yards) and Ross Dwelley (3 for 73 yards; 8 yard TD) were his main targets. The ground game was impressive too with Joseph Binda Jr. (17-yard TD), Blake Martin (6-yard TD) and Emilio Martinez (60 yards; 6-yard TD) all getting into the endzone. While the offense totaled 408 yards, the Torero defense held the Wildcats to just 135 yards.

In the third quarter Davidson got on the scoreboard with William Wicks hauling in a 4-yard touchdown at the 13:00 mark. The Toreros answered with Michael Bandy pulling in a 25-yard TD pass from Lawrence, followed by Jonathan Petersen busting in from the 1-yard line in a rare fullback performance for his first collegiate touchdown.

The fourth quarter was highlighted by the Torero defense shining with an impressive goal line stand, followed by Alex Farina breaking free on the left side for an 87-yard touchdown sprint. On the team's next possession he would find Alex Spadone for a 12-yard touchdown reception on the right side.

For the game the Toreros totaled 706 yards of offense, a new school record. The previous mark was 663 vs. Marist in 2003. Lawrence finished 24-for-28 for 403 yards and 3 touchdowns. Priest (8-110, 1 TD) and Bandy (6-133, 1 TD) finished with the top numbers. Defensively the Toreros were paced Arrion Archie, Marcus Vaivao and Max Michaels, each with 7 tackles.
