SAN DIEGO -- The Torero football team handed Marist a 35-7 defeat to finish off the 2017 regular season in style with their second straight undefeated PFL season with an 8-0 record. It also marks USD's fourth straight PFL title and sixth in its last seven seasons. The Toreros find out Sunday morning (ESPNU, 8:00 a.m.) who it will play, and where, in the upcoming NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs.

The Torero defense held the Red Foxes to just seven points, but Marist put up a good fight and made some nice plays throughout the game in finishing with 305 total yards of offense. Senior nickel back Max Michaels had a big day with 11 tackles (10 solo) and was followed by a solid outings from free safety Daniel Tolbert (9 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 pass breakup), senior strong safety Colton Giorgi (9 stops) and junior LB Kim Mahoney (9 tackles).

Despite a season low 271 yards of offense, the Toreros were efficient in totaling their 35 points. Anthony Lawrence completed 13-26 passes for 119 yards and two scores. Senior receiver Justin Priest hauled in six balls for 51 yards and two second half touchdowns (7 & 12 yards). USD jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with touchdown runs from Zach Nelson (1 yard) and Blake Martin (1 yard). Emilio Martinez sprinted in from 11 yards out midway through the third period for the team's third rushing score.

Joseph Binda Jr. was the team leader in rushing with 68 yards on 10 carries. Martinez finished with 47 yards on 14 carries. Senior Ross Dwelley collected 3 receptions for 33 yards. Senior punter Jack Flatau had a productive day with 4 punts for 194 yards (48.5 average), including a long of 64 yards and two inside the Marist 20-yard line. Senior DE Jonathan Petersen added one more sack to improve his USD career record to 39.

Marist was paced by QB Jacob Hallenbeck (13-28 for 240 yards, 1 TD) and receiver Juston Christian with 3 receptions for 105 yards, including a 77-yard TD reception in the first quarter that pulled the Red Foxes to within 14-7. Defensively Willie Barrett paced the team with 6 tackles.

In a post-game trophy presentation on the field after the game, the Toreros received their 2017 PFL Championship trophy.
