Buies Creek, NC - The USD Toreros handed Campbell a 50-21 defeat today to earn the outright PFL Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. It marks the first undefeated PFL run since Dayton's 8-0 mark in 2010. The last time USD went undefeated was in 2006 when the Toreros finished 7-0 and 11-1 overall. The 9-1 Toreros will find out their first round opponent in the upcoming FCS Playoffs on Sunday morning.
After stopping the Toreros on their opening drive, Campbell took over on their own 4-yard line following a Jack Flatau punt that was downed inside the 5-yard line. On their first play from scrimmage, Campbell QB Anthony Robbins found a streaking Aaron Blockman up the right sideline for a 96-yard scoring pass play. USD found itself trailing 7-0 less than four minutes into the contest.
On their second drive of the game the Toreros put together one of their patented long drives, going 89 yards on 14 plays over an 8:02 time span. The drive would end on a 4-yard TD rush from Jonah Hodges, his 14th rushing TD of the season. Jamal Agnew would pull down Robbins' first pass attempt of their second drive near midfield giving the Toreros great field possession. The first quarter would end in a 7-7 tie with Anthony Lawrence completing 10-of-14 for 102 yards.
Following the Agnew pick, the Toreros marched 45 yards over 9 plays with Lawrence scoring on a 1-yard QB sneak with 12:01 to go in the second quarter. USD's PAT attempt was unsuccessful after holder Reid Sinnett gathered in a low snap and his eventual pass attempt was incomplete. USD would extend their lead to 16-7 on a 34-yard field goal from Patrick Murray with 7:59 left. The Torero defense would force another Campbell punt that was sent into the endzone for a touchback with the Toreros taking over on their own 20-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Hodges escaped a tackle and made an acrobatic move to break free for an 80-yard TD sprint to extend the lead to 23-7 with 2:40 to go. Campbell would close out the half with a 9-play, 75-yard drive with Robbins connecting with Austin Robbins pulling in a 10-yard TD pass in the left corner of the endzone.
At the halftime break Hodges had 131 yards rushing on 13 carries with the 2 touchdowns. Lawrence would finish 14-22 for 144 yards, and Hodges (5-57) and Brian Riley (5-52) would be the leading receivers. Agnew would pace the defense with 5 tackles and his interception, while Jonathan Petersen would add 2 stops and a big quarterback sack (-7 Yards).
The second half began with a big defensive play by Campbell that pulled the Fighting Camels to within two points at 23-21. Daniel Bostick sacked Anthony Lawrence and forced a fumble with Syd Holt scooping it up on the San Diego 21-yard line and racing in for Campbell's first defensive score of the season. Campbell got the ball back immediately following a fumble by Agnew near midfield on the Camels punt. Following a Petersen sack (-7), Devyn Bryant picked off Robbins' pass attempt at the San Diego 37-yard line and took it back 63 yards for a pick-six to push the score to 30-21.
A third quarterback sack by Petersen forced another Campbell punt and the Toreros took over on their own 37-yard line. USD would follow with a 5-play, 63-yard drive with Jereke Armstrong rushing to the left side for a 1-yard TD run advancing USD's lead to 37-21. On Campbell's next possession, it was Petersen again making a big play. He was credited with a quarterback hurry as he got his hand on Robbins just as he got his pass off and the errant toss was intercepted by KJ Mahoney at the 32-yard line who returned it for USD's second pick-six of the day giving USD a 43-21 advantage. That would be the score at the end of the third period.
The 4th quarter began with USD increasing the score to 50-21. Lawrence connected with WR Brian Riley for 6 yards that finished off a 7-play, 42-yard drive. Max Michaels, who finished with a team-best 10 tackles, snared a late interception and USD would find the endzone one more time with an 8-yard run from freshman Jordan Charles. The 57 points was a season-high for the Toreros.
For the game Hodges would finish with 158 yards rushing on 19 carries to go with his two touchdowns (4, 80). Lawrence finished 20-for-28 for 205 yards and one score. Senior WR Brian Riley pulled down 7 balls for 61 yards and one score, while TE Ross Dwelley caught 6 balls for 55 yards. The Torero defense held Campbell to 47 yards on 33 carries, and the Fighting Camels would finish the day with 260 yards of offense. Junior DE Jonathan Petersen had a big day with 5 tackles and 3 sacks.
