FARGO, ND- The No. 2 seed North Dakota State Bison (11-1) dealt the USD Toreros a 38-3 loss before 18,067 fans at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome in second round action of the 2017 NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs. It marked the second straight year the Toreros were knocked out by the Bison who will host Wofford next weekend. San Diego closes out another outstanding season with an overall record of 10-3.
In the first quarter the Toreros were forced to punt after collecting one first down on the opening drive. The Bison responded with a 7-play, 82-yard drive that was capped off by QB Easton Stick finding Seth Wilson open up the middle for a 19-yard touchdown. A key play on the drive for NDSU was a 41-yard reception by Nate Jensen from Stick that moved the ball into Torero territory down to the 40-yard line. The Bison made it 14-0 following a 51-yard touchdown run by Stick at the 5:24 mark that capped off a 5-play, 75-yard drive. A Torero fumble gave the Bison the ball at the San Diego 41 with 2:14 to go in the quarter. Facing a 3rd-and-9, Stick scrambled 14 yards for a first down to the 26. The quarter ended with the Bison leading 14-0 behind 175 yards of offense.
The second quarter started with Jonathan Petersen sacking Stick for a 7-yard loss. The sack was Petersen's 42nd career sack, moving him within one of a new all-time FCS record. Cam Pedersen answered with a season-long 47 yard field goal to push the score to 17-0. Petersen would then set the new FCS record of 43 total with a strip-sack against Stick with Kim Mahoney recovering the fumble on the San Diego 38-yard line. Petersen would collect his third sack (-11 yards) of the first half with just over four minutes to go. North Dakota State would own a 17-0 lead at the break behind 253 yards of offense.
The Bison added three scores in the third period to take control of the game and lead 38-0 heading into the final 15 minutes of action. Ty Brooks rushed in from 23 yards for the first score of the second half. Easton Stick then connected with back Bruce Anderson for a 48-yard completion followed by RJ Urzendowski for a 13-yard score.
Patrick Murray converted on a personal-best 48 yard field goal to get the Toreros on the scoreboard with 13:59 to go in the game. That would be the final points of the game. For the game Lawrence finished 13-25 for 107 yards. Justin Priest pulled down 4 balls for 50 yards and Emilio Martinez rushed 10 times for 22 yards. Jack Flatau punted well on the day with 8 punts for a 42.2 yard average. He had a long of 51 yards and placed three inside the Bison 20 yard line. Defensively Colton Giorgi collected a game-high 11 tackles and was followed by Kim Mahoney's nine. But the spotlight was on Petersen's record-breaking day -- he finished with 8 stops to go with his 3 sacks and one forced fumble.
NDSU was paced by QB Easton Stick who completed 9-16 passes for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns, and rushed 8 times for 54 yards and one score. Running back Bruce Anderson carried the ball 14 times and finished with 112 yards. The Bison totaled 472 yards to USD's 174.
USD's senior class close out their career with four straight Pioneer Football League championships; three trips to the FCS Playoffs, including the school's and PFL's only two playoff victories; and a four-year record of 38-10 with a string of 21 consecutive PFL victories.
