Jan. 10, 2014
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The academic honors keep piling up for seniors Robbie Beathard and Blake Oliaro. They recently were selected to the FCS Athletics Directors Association (ADA) Academic All-Star Team. 43 players were named to the team and Beathard and Oliaro represent two of the three players chosen from the Pioneer Football League (Campbell RB Kurt Odom was the other).
This marks the second straight year Oliaro has received this honor. He holds a 3.50 cumulative GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. Beathard, an accountancy major, has a 3.78 GPA.
Both players were also named Capital One Academic All-Americans last month, becoming the first Toreros to earn that honor since 2004 (RB Evan Harney). Oliaro and Beathard are both three-time PFL All-Academic First Team selections.
There were 90 total nominees for the ADA Academic All-Star Team. Each of the nominees was required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.
A special Review Committee of Football Championship Subdivision athletics directors was responsible for selecting the all-star team. Completing this task were Brian Hutchinson, Morehead State (chair); Ken Beazer, Southern Utah; Charlie Cobb, Appalachian State; Ron Strollo, Youngstown State; and Jeff Tingey, Idaho State.
