Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Sports Network FCS Preseaon All-America Teams (First, Second, Third) were announced today and the USD Toreros had two players represented - junior defensive end Blake Oliaro (First Team Defense) and junior split end/punt returner Sam Hoekstra (Third Team Defense). The Sports Network FCS Preseason All-America Teams consists of 93 players over the three teams. USD has two of the three players from the Pioneer Football League - the Torero duo is joined by Davidson wide receiver Lanny Funsten (Third Team Offense).
Oliaro, from Folsom, California, is coming off an outstanding 2011 campaign that saw him earn Associated Press FCS All-America Second Team honors. Additionally, he was named the PFL Defensive Player of the Year and the USD's Defensive Most Valuable Player. He tied for 4th in the FCS in sacks (1.36) and ranked 10th in tackles for loss (1.77). For the season he finished with 57 tackles (35 solo), 15 quarterback sacks (-99 yards), 19.5 tackles for loss (-125), 6 quarterback hurries, 2 fumble recoveries (1 returned for a TD), 1 forced fumble, 1 interception and 1 blocked kick.
Hoekstra, from nearby Carlsbad (Santa Fe Christian HS), was recognized for his role as a punt returner on the Third Team Defense. Last season Hoekstra ranked 11th in the FCS with his 11.25 yards per return average. A Second Team All-PFL performer on offense, he led the Toreros with 53 receptions and 6 touchdown catches to go with 554 receiving yards.
The Toreros kickoff their 2012 schedule with a road game at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday, September 1st at 4:00 pm.
